I'm 11 years old now, so I was only a newborn baby when the twin towers came down. My mum saw it live on TV. We're going to Canada next year, and as a side-trip we were thinking of going to New York City, but of course my mum isn't going to NY after the terrorist attack on the twin towers that killed thousands of people. So I want to say I'm very sorry for your loss of your loved ones, and we are thinking of them today.
And again very sorry (L)

Day of Darkness
It started out as such a lovely day.
Morning breezes swept away
The urban haze
That paints most days
A dismal shade of gray.
The skyline on this Tuesday
Had a backdrop of bright blue.
We climbed up from the subway,
Alighted from the bus,
And sunshine smiled on us.
It started out as such a lovely day.
It ended as the darkest day of all.
Grey dust obscured the sunlight
As bits of paper,
Dusty fragments,
Lost lives, drifted down.
The skyline on that Tuesday
Had a hole right through its heart.
We gazed at smiling pictures,
The missing posted there.
Such loss and deep despair,
It ended as the saddest day of all.
Koalas and kangaroos,
The call of the kookaburra,
An excited Maryland family
Traveling to Australia,
Two little girls eager to see
The funny platypus,
Dana’s mop of soft brown curls
Bounced as she skipped along.
She brought along her Lambie
To cuddle while she slept.
Mom and Dad packed picture books
And games to pass the time.
Zoe loved to sing and dance,
Weave flowers through her hair.
She was a budding actress,
A graceful soccer player
Eager to meet Aussie schoolmates
On the other side of the world.
I think of Charles and Leslie,
Who loved their daughters so.
I imagine they protected them
So that they’d never know
Their dreams were in great danger
On that sad September morning.
Zoe Falkenberg, eight years old,
Her sister Dana, three,
Maryland’s youngest victims,
Their futures snatched away—
Did I tell you Zoe loved zinnias?
Now they grow in memorial gardens,
Their colorful flower faces
Smiling up at the sky.

Sometimes we lose track of those we knew and loved. Sometimes we lose track of their families. Other times the seasons of their life take them away from a place where they choose not to look back. Still, they are not forgotten by the ones who remain closest to them. We are remembered for the sum of our lives, and then we pass on and leave behind memories. I take no credit for knowing anybody who died that day. I only stand back and empathize with those who were family members or friends.

I would like to give my personal apology to every single family and friend of someone who was injured or killed during 9/11. I am very sorry. My daddy (a fireman) left for a month to go help and do search and rescue, so I hope he helped one of you loved ones.
I'm sorry once again,
Imani
