I remember Al from working at LaGuardia Airport back in 1990/91. He was a PA officer and I was a Trump Ticket Agent. we always had great laughs with you buddy. I was so sorry to hear this was your fate. May you rest at peace with the Lord, and may he comfort your family. We will never forget!

I attended the University of Dayton with Al. We graduated together in 1983. For 3 years Al and I worked together as janitors on our so called "shower crew" in the girls dorm, Marycrest Hall. For anyone that knew Al...there was never a dull moment! I had more laughs in that 2 hour, 3 day a week, 3 year period than you can possibly imagine. His Bruce Springsteen impersonations were priceless and still bring a smile to my face when I think of them.

Al was a great big guy, with a great big heart. Quick to smile. Quick to laugh. Quick to make others laugh. A truly great guy that the world was lucky to have, even if for only 40 years. I miss you Big Man.

It has been nine years today since the tragedy happened. I remember in September 1979, when I was 8 years old, my father drove a station wagon filled with clothes, stereo equipment, and college supplies to Dayton University. He was taking my brother and Al to college for the first time. I was along for the ride and will never forget it. My next memory of Al was at my brother's wedding, when I was 14. Al and I were in the wedding party. My brother came over to me during the reception and said, "It's alright to drink. Just be inconspicuous." Then Al, in his infinite wisdom, says, "It's alright to be inconspicuous, just drink!" So I proceeded to drink and have a great time. That was the last time I had ever seen him. I am 38 now, and I still remember him as if it were yesterday. God bless you, Al. We will miss you always, and we will never forget!

Love,
Tim Burke

It's been five and a half years and this is the first note I have written about my friend and partner Al. I could go on for pages about what a great friend, person ect. Al was, but to me the thing that stays with me everyday is how in the three years we were partners such by being and watching Al I myself became a better person. When work got to me Al would such say 'Mo I gotta it'. When I was thinking stupid, he point to his head and tell me "MO THINK" and for whatever reason I would make the right move. I miss my friend. It hurts such to think about him. At least I got a chance to know and learn from him because I am a greater human being because of AL.

I don't think anyone who meets Al ever forgets him. he was larger than life, in all he did. Huge laugh, huge smile, huge heart. I went to college with Al, and still can remember him like i'd seen him yesterday. Prayers and warm thoughts to Nancy and their kids.

Dear Big Al,
As the fifth Anniversary approachs you are still in all your friends memories, hearts and thoughts. LGA wouldn't have been the same without you. Not a day goes by that your generousity of spirit and kindness is not remembered. As long as you are in your family's and firends hearts and minds you will nevere be forgotten. We love you AL. May you rest in peace. You were one of the best PA Officers and always brought a smile to everyones face. Thanks for all the memories.

My life changed the day I met Alfonse. He was a wonderful and happy friend. I loved him like a brother. I miss him tremendously. My life was so enriched having him in it. He taught me to celebrate every minute of life and to keep laughing. God bless him, Nancy and the kids. We love all the Niedermeyers.

In 1999, a tradition was started in memory of Arnie Karush, founding member of the San Diego Software Council and La Jolla resident. That year, three limos were hired and 24 homeless children for St. Vincent de Paul's Village were treated to an In-and-Out Burger dinner at La Jolla Cove, where community members gathered to sing Christmas carols. In addition, the children were visited by the San Diego Padres Pad Squad, who gave the children gifts. In 2000, eight limos and 64 children received the same gift.
In 2001, the title "Big Al's Christmas Caroling at the Cove" was added to celebrate the life of Alfonse Joseph Niedermeyer, a Port Authority Police Officer who died a hero, saving lives on Sept. 11. Nine limos and 72 children were treated that year. Last year, all 90 children from the Village were taken to "Big Al's Christmas" in 14 limos.
This year, help from the community is needed to give the children a night they'll never forget. On Dec. 8 from 5:15 to 6:40 p.m., on the fourth floor patio at the La Jolla Cove Suites, located at 1155 Coast Blvd., show how much the community of San Diego cares about the children by singing Christmas carols with them.

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.

Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!
