I can’t help but to admit to the masked pain forever held within for all the families of people taken in the tragedy of 9/11, especially to the family of Capt. Brian Hickey. To all these families please remember that at times we may bury our feelings and appear uncaring or unsympathetic, but that is only our human element assisting us to cope. We have not forgotten and never will; never. Bless you all, and please know that for every person that extends well wishes and prayers to you, there are thousands of others silently doing the same. Love and Peace.

As we approach the 10 year mark, your Bravery, Honor and Spirit will never be forgotten along with those who served alongside you. The F.D.N.Y. and N.Y.P.D. showed the world that day what makes us the best Nation on Earth.
God Bless.....

Brian, last night I thought of you, and how much you have been missed these past ten years. I hope that your soul can rest. God bless your memory.

Roger Davis, Bethpage classmate.

I know the Hickey family from Bethpage. They are some of the best people you would ever meet in your life. Brian and his brother Raymond, who passed away before Brian, were both great people and are missed by all. I spoke to Mister Hickey recently, and he sounded fine.... What a loss to a great American family!

May Brian's family be comforted by the knowledge that he will live forever in America's hearts. May his memory be eternal.

I barely know Brian through his good friend, Nick Hasset. They were both firefighters in Beth Paige. I want Brian's family to know that I will never forget him and his commitment to his work and family.

As 9/11 approaches again, and as I see firefighters, I remember Brian. I knew him when he was young, and I am impressed at what a hero he turned out to be, and I am sorry we lost him in 9-11. I wish the best for his wife Donna and his children. I will remember him always. I have the tape he and Ray made, and it saddens me to see them. They are both gone. At the same time, I understand what wonderful people they were, and I am impressed with their greatness and dedication.

I grew up 2 doors down from Brian.  I lived on the corner of 10th and Maple Ave. Although I was friends with his sister Mary, I knew Brian very well, too. He was a great kid, and we all loved him. If any of his family read this now, please know that I always think of him when I think of 9/11, and I honor his memory and bravery. Please write to me at suzkstein (at) tampabay (dot) rr (dot) com or suzzzzzz1957 (at) yahoo (dot) com if you read this. I know this is eight years later, but I was living in Queens at the time of 9/11, and Frank Untener told me about Brian. I am very sorry for your loss, and I have only the best memories of what a great person he was!

I remember Brian from when I joined the Bethpage Fire Department as a young kid with no real direction in life. Brian was my company captain at the time, and he took me under his wing because he took a liking to me. Brian gave me direction, and thanks to his early guidance, I was able to fulfill my life's dream of becoming a police officer, and more importantly a person who was proud of himself. Thank you, Brian, from that former scared kid. May your family always remember what a great person you were and the influence you had over others in such a positive way.

A fireman's fireman through and through! Many times I, too, got a chance to ride with Brian at 38 Truck, and I love that memory. Some memories of Brian include the times I worked with Brian at Rescue 4 when I was detailed. I also remember going to work with him when he was at 126 Truck and I was at 270 Engine. I reminded him that the last time we rode to work together, he was taking me in to "buff" and now we were both going in to work! That ride was when he told me if I got the chance to take the cop job in Nassau, I should consider it for the sake of my family, and I did! The most funny memory I have of Brian was when we were taking up from a job in South Jamaica. Brian was in Rescue 4, and I at Squad 270. I took him to the front of the squad and told him I wanted to show the front of the squad to him. He asked why, and I told him because he usually only gets to see the back of it at jobs. He laughed, and we took up. I miss you, Brian. Rest in peace, bro!

I knew Brian Hickey in Grammer School junior high and high school in the Bethpage School isd. I also was in the Bethpage Volunteer Fire department with Brian when he went into the U.S. Air Force in about 1975. I left the state to go to college and lost contact. I was not a close friend, but He was a fire fighter thru and thru. I noted his death after 9-11. He was a fine man and a great firefighter to be remembered.

I had the pleasure of meeting and knowing Brian while he was stationed at Hill AFB, Utah in 1977/78. Brian was the type of person that you like immediately. Brian used to kid me about my Chicago accent. In our conversations, Brian would always tell me how much he wanted to become a New York fireman. Brian demonstrated--by picking me up on his shoulders, explaining to me, "This is the correct way to carry someone from a burning building." Brian was just an incredibly nice guy. Becoming a New York fireman was his dream. Brian died doing what he loved best.... May you walk with the angels.

In September of 1981, my son, Brian Hickey, became a member of the FDNY. Completing proby school he was assigned to Engine 36 in Harlem. Five months later, in February, 1982, I “rode” with him for the first time…and continued “riding” with him for the next 20 years whenever I was fortunate enough to do so. Many times I even took off from my own job to be with my son on his ‘24s’.
From Engine 36, he moved to Ladder 38, then to Rescue 4. From there he made Lieutenant, bounced for a while, then settled into Ladder 126 for a few years. Then, promoted to Captain, bounced again for a while until one day he received a call from Ray Downey, Chief of Special Operations, offering my son the Captains spot in Rescue 4…which he accepted without hesitation.
Throughout his career, in ever company he ever worked in, I listened to many men praise him…for his knowledge and love of the job, his honesty, his sincere care for his men, and for his bravery…and through him, I was fortunate and honored to have met the most caring, most decent, and by far the bravest men I’ve ever known in my life.
The very first night I ‘rode’ with my son, twenty years ago, he had the watch at three in the morning. The house was quiet, everyone asleep but Brian and I sitting at the watch desk. He said, "Dad, I can't’ believe I'm here, my dream came true. I only hope that time goes slow so I can wallow in this job”.
As always is the case, twenty years ‘flew’ by, and my son has answered his final alarm…and although our hearts are breaking, I know Brian died as he would want to…with his men. I cherish the memory of that moment…that precious moment he and I shared at three in the morning so long ago.
He was my hero…to me he was ten feet tall…
……I will miss him forever.
