My highschool did a memorial type thing were they gave nametags of 9-11 victims to the students to wear. I had Carlton. HE seems like more than a great man

I first met Carlton in person when I brought him to Sydney for the Australian Greenhouse Conference in 2000. Key government officials portrayed him as a jet-setting global leader on carbon trading, and yet he wore a tropical shirt, shorts, and sandals when we first met (we had invited him to a BBQ). We made his travel arrangements, so he could go scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef during his visit. There was a great deal of media interest in Carlton's discussions of how to make money by having cows burp less. I was lucky enough to catch up with Carlton again in August 2001 during a trip to New York to gain more insight from him on carbon trading. I'm honoured to have known Carlton, albeit briefly. He had a great love of life, his family, and his profession that inspired everyone who got to know him.

Once again today at work, as we talked about past jobs, a co-worker of mine mentioned Akamai and the fact he worked with a guy who died in 9-11. Whenever this happens, I always have to tell my Carlton Bartels story: I was a camper at Keewaydin when he was on staff, and we used to sit by Lake Dunmore and talk. At all times he talked to us campers as if we were his equals and had genuine respect for us. I remember him talking about carbon credits in 1980! He was years before his time in his perception of culture, society, and the problems that needed to be solved. His example and spirit lives on in many of us, as we were lucky enough to interact with him and learn from him. Most importantly, he made sure that we knew that he was learning from us as well! This is a leadership trait that has served me well. Thanks, Carlton!

Hey, dad! This is ladybug, or munchie. Whats up? I still wear your boxers with the ants in them. You were the best dad I could have asked for. I hear soooooo many things about you. You know, how you were struck by lightning and lived, how you went sky diving and went scuba diving in caves. I still miss how the four of us used to pile up in you and mom's bed and watch Mulan.

Love you always,
Eva

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.

Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!

9-11Heroes.us is a personal effort, not a business, nor is the site dedicated to any specific person or persons. We will not post negative comments. Moreover, 9-11Heroes.us reserves the right to choose which comments to post and also to edit the comments for spelling, punctuation, grammar, or edit comments that are unkind or offensive in some manner. We are maintaining this site with our own money and time. We try to keep the advertisements to a minimum and we try to make them as unobtrusive as possible. The revenue goes back to maintaining this site.
