As we approach the 10 year mark after the atrocity that rocked all of our lives, I keep thinking of Cathy. She was a good friend while I lived in the USA but we still kept in touch after I moved from New York to the UK. We had a lot in common. We were both professional working women, dealing with the pleasures and challenges of raising children at the same time. I was supposed to meet up with Cathy in early August 2001 on a business trip to New York which actually brought me to the world trade center. My schedule ended up being too hectic on the day so we spoke on the phone but did not meet. Our plan was to meet in mid September when I planned to return again. The events of 9.11.2001 meant that the phone call was our last contact. As I watched the attacks on the world trade centre unfold from the trading floor where I worked, all I could do was think of Cathy. I knew where she worked. I think of her often and always wonder how David and their now quite grown up children are doing. Cathy remains in my heart and always will. I miss her.

She was a wonderful neighbor on Garden Place.

Hi. My name is Mary, and I am trying to find out if this is the Cathy Chirls that lived on Livington Street in Brooklyn and had a baby sitter named Mary for her son Nicholas. Please, please let me know. I can be contacted at www (dot) mochafreeze22 (at) netzero (dot) net.

I just found out yesterday that Cathy was a victim of the 9-11 attacks. I'd known Cathy since we were 11.

She loved her children so much. We talked alot during our child bearing years and she was always so enthusiastic about having a family. Last night I searched the web and was so pleased to see Nick is doing well at college. I imagined what Cathy would say. She'd say, "Can you believe it! My little boy is a Yale. I have a son who goes to Yale." She was always so delighted with the accomplishments of all 3 of you. She would brag about you, laugh and smile, brag somemore and then laugh at herself and brag some more.

Sydney, you were 3 the last time I saw you. Your mother thought you were the most precious thing on earth. Your every move made her so happy. She'd grab you and put you on her lap and hug you to death and say, "Isn't she just so cute, isn't she adorable." I remember the day she chose your name. She thought it was such an utterly cool name, and it is!

Lastly I'd like to send my best wishes to the adults in Cathy's life. She loved David and her brothers and her mother. She was all about family and I am sure her love for you all is really missed. I will miss Cathy, too.

I can still hear Cathy's voice and her infectious laugh even though I last saw her many many years ago. Thanks for looking me up in Philly when your son was at a squash tournament. We had a great time in high school.... Love to your family.

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.

Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!

9-11Heroes.us is a personal effort, not a business, nor is the site dedicated to any specific person or persons. We will not post negative comments. Moreover, 9-11Heroes.us reserves the right to choose which comments to post and also to edit the comments for spelling, punctuation, grammar, or edit comments that are unkind or offensive in some manner.
