Chuck,

You have lived in my heart for almost ten years.... Your sister told me of your sacrifice. Tonight my first thoughts went to you and to one other friend who gave his life helping others.

Just wanted you and your family to know: Chuck, you are not forgotten. Your memory lives on. Your sacrifice continues to inspire!

I knew Chuck from the Emerald Lancers, Old Bridge, NJ. A nicer guy you'd never meet, always the first one to help out in any situation. The world misses him because the world needs more people like Chuck.

Chuckie, you were a wonderful family, friend--not just to me--but to everyone who knew you. As my brother's great friend and as a fellow member of the Emerald Lancers you always were a shining star. You were a role model for how to be a giving, caring person. You always put others before yourself. I thank you for being the incredible person you were. You lived life to the fullest.

Chuck and I were friends from the time we were 6 years old.
We made our First Communion together, our Confirmation, shared good times with our families at the Friendly Sons and were corpsmates in the Emerald Lancers for 8 years. Whenever you needed help, all you had to do was look and there he was. When my Mom passed away, it was such a stressful, emotional time and I was not handling the viewing well at all; then I looked up and saw Chuck's wonderful face and felt his wonderful hug, and he gave me such comfort. It was the last time I saw him. You are sorely missed, Chuck and I for one am not surprised you died a hero's death- you were an everyday hero every day of your life. Peace and love, Deb

God be with you, Charles. I didn't even know you, but I will think of your family.

A Hero Born

The call was not yours

But an answer you gave

That day that lives in our hearts

A simple man from the start

A common figure

But in desperate times

You did transfigure

From the common

To a hero

When the score was

Terrorist 1 point, America zero

You gave your all to those in need

Your own safety you didn’t heed

What came from within you

That sad day, America’s torch was passed your way

Was the meaning of sacrifice

You joined the ranks of those that gave their lives

To this great nation, to our home

A hero was born where none was known

The common hero who served his fellows

Charles Gregory Costello

Charles Gregory Costello Jr. was my husband. Known to us all as "Chuck", he was a perfect husband, father, soccer coach. He taught CCD, he rode his bike long distance. He was always a sweet man who thought of others before himself. As he did that day. He wasn't working in the WTC. he was working in the city and ran nearly 20 blocks to help total strangers. Something he did regularly all his life. I loved him then and will always love him. He was my soulmate. I remember a line from a children's book we loved. "I'll love you forever, I'll love you for always as long as your living my baby you'll be". Well Chuck your still my baby, and the love I have for you will never end.

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.

Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!

9-11Heroes.us is a personal effort, not a business, nor is the site dedicated to any specific person or persons. We will not post negative comments. Moreover, 9-11Heroes.us reserves the right to choose which comments to post and also to edit the comments for spelling, punctuation, grammar, or edit comments that are unkind or offensive in some manner.
