I work at the U.S. Post Office on University in Peoria. A bill was passed to name our office after Chip Chan, graduate of Richwoods High School. How wonderful it is to see something like this with our post office. Normally we hear such negative news about the postal service and I am happy to work in a place named after Chip. My heart goes out to his family.

Dear John and Julie:
My thoughts and prayers are with you on this day. I did not know Chip but I am told he lived up to his namesakes, all three of them. I made my first trip to NYC in December. At ground zero I could think of nothing else but your son and the indescribable loss you suffered. Please forgive me for having remained silent all this time. Chip deserves a place among all of the honored dead who paid the ultimate price to remind us that our freedoms do not come without tremendous sacrifice. God bless all of you.
Your cousin,
John Cremer

Thinking of you as 9-11 is in the spotlight again. It doesn't change the past as many journey through life without their loved ones. But know that I and many others continue to remember Chip and your family. Continued prayers for strength and peace to you.

To the Chan Family,
My deepest sympathies, thoughts, and prayers are with you. I regret only finding this and the Legacy.com guestbook now. I remember still being pretty fresh out of college and in my third year of teaching when I heard Chip had passed away. We were in the same class at St. Thomas, but then we parted ways, going to different high schools in Peoria. I will always remember what a "genuine, nice guy" he was at school and seeing him with your family at church. He was continually with a smile on his face.
Know how loved he was and that he will never be forgotten in so many of our hearts. My husband, Major Hans Dochtermann has served in four tours of duty to Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan and our greatest hope for your family is peace.
God bless,
Andrea, Hans, and Eva Dochtermann

I went to St Thomas School, too, but I was a lot younger than Chip. After 9-11, St Thomas started an award to honour him. Every year an eighth grader is presented with the Chip Chan award in the memory of his time at St Thomas. He will always be remembered by the students there.

Well I don't know Chip, but I have to say I feel for his family and I happy to say I donated blood in his memory today in Tulare CA.

I went to St. Thomas Grade School in Peoria, IL with Chip. I did not know initially that he was lost in the attacks that dreadful day. I remember praying for all the families who had lost someone and all who were involved in the rescue aftermath. It wasn't until a couple of years later, when I moved back to Peoria, that I ran into another classmate who told me about Chip. I was devastated. He was a kind, funny, caring soul. I enjoyed being in class with him and benefiting from his sense of humor—he could always make me laugh when I needed to. I, too, remember the stories about his first home run and what was buried in the yard. Although he is no longer physically with us, he is with all who knew and loved him. His spirit is with us every day, and we shall meet him again. God bless you, my prayers are with you.

We recently bought the old "Chan" house. When we excavated the back yard for a patio and fence, we found buried golf balls, baseballs, and wiffleballs. Each find brought a smile to our faces as we thought about the family of boys who once roamed the yard. And with each one we remembered Chip, a young hero that we never knew but have heard a lot about. Tonight, as I sit in the living room of this house, I pray for Chip and the family he left behind. Please know that Chip's memory will live on in the children who now live here. Because of Chip, they understand not only the worldly impact but also the personal impact of 9/11. God bless.

Thank you to everyone who has kept the spirit of Chip alive though he can't be with us in person. I cherish everything that all of you have said about Chip over the past six years. It doesn't get any easier, but knowing that he is loved and in the thoughts of so many brings comfort to me. Thank you, everyone! I still have Chip's home-run ball in a case on my desk to remind me of his accomplishments and how I want to follow in his footsteps.

Remembering Chip... and thinking of the many who love and miss him so very much... especially as the 9/11 date comes again. May you find strength in faith, family and friends... who you need it most.

Chip and I grew up together on the baseball diamond of Kellar Park, in Peoria, IL. We played many games against and with each other. I remember the game when he hit his first home run over the chain-link fence on the back diamond when we were playing with the Cardinals. He rounded the bases with a huge grin on his face trying to contain himself. It was a great day! I will always remember: What was a cloudy day became the brightest day in the park! That was awesome. My family and I would like to send our love and support to the Chan family on this 6-year anniversary.

Dear Julie,
I pray all is well with you and your family. I think of your son often. I will pray to St. Philomena today for Charles and you. All I can say is thank God for large families. There are so many more shoulders to lean on. I am sending you my best wishes and compassion.

It's been one of those days where I can't stop thinking about Chip and how much I miss him. He was best friends with my brother, Adam, and used to terrorize me like a big brother from the time I was about 12! The Chans lived down the street from my dad, and he used to come over all the time. He was part of my family, and I'll never forget September 11, 2001 for the rest of my life or how it felt to know that, even though Adam had survived, Chip had not. You are always in my thoughts and prayers and will be forever.

I remember riding the school bus (to St. Thomas) with Chip. He was much older than me. All through my schooling at St. Thomas, I knew he had many siblings. I thought, what a great family. I hope and pray for your family and Chip, of peaceful thoughts and full lives for each of you, while remembering your brother, son, and loved one.

Post your memorial thoughts:
Share your feelings and memories of grief and
sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories. If you knew this
person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with
us something about his/her life:
- what kind of person he/she was,
- what nice points you remember about him/her,
- what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
- what you two perhaps did together,
- what he/she meant to you,
- or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging
for other people.
This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.
Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!
