Dan,
You are missed.
Lisa and I truly enjoyed your company, laughter and that awesome bottle of Rum you brought for our house warming! After many years of looking at the bottle in our liquor cabinet we finally cracked the seal, made a toast and cried.
You would be honored and certainly a bit embarrassed to know of the Intelligence Award named in your honor. Rest in Peace my friend!
Joe

Dan, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers today.

I met Dan Shanower in the fall of 1979, when we were both freshmen at Carroll College in Waukesha, WI.  We lived on the same floor of the only co-ed dorm on campus.  The guys and girls who lived in Swarthout Dorm were very interesting and diverse people.  Because Carroll is a small, private, liberal arts college, I got to know Dan quite well. He truly treated all persons he met as special and showed a genuine interest in them.  I cannot think of Dan in my mind's eye without seeing a joyous grin on his face. As it happens, when we graduated from Carroll in 1983 we all went our separate ways, me to Arizona for the last 20 years, Dan all over the world.  I always looked forward to the publications from our alma mater as Dan was a frequent contributor updating his latest activities.  It was nice to know he was doing well.

When I was looking at the list of victims shortly after 9/11 I spotted Dan's name and immediately e-mailed several old college classmates and Dan's frat brothers to find out if it was really true.  Sadly, it was.  There never was a question whether I'd attend his memorial service in Naperville.  In October 2001, I took a red-eye flight from Phoenix to Chicago the Friday following his interment in Arlington.

At the church services in Naperville, how I felt is indescribable.  Following the service, those of us who knew Dan from Carroll College gathered at the nearby home of two Carroll College alumni.  This was the first time in nearly twenty years I have been together with most of the people who were instrumental in my personal growth and self-discovery during my first time away from home so many years ago.  By virtue of Dan's absence that day, he brought together so many who truly cared about him and each other.  Thanks Dan, I'll never forget.

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.

Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!

9-11Heroes.us is a personal effort, not a business, nor is the site dedicated to any specific person or persons. We will not post negative comments. Moreover, 9-11Heroes.us reserves the right to choose which comments to post and also to edit the comments for spelling, punctuation, grammar, or edit comments that are unkind or offensive in some manner. We are maintaining this site with our own money and time. We try to keep the advertisements to a minimum and we try to make them as unobtrusive as possible. The revenue goes back to maintaining this site.

Thank you for your understanding in these matters.
