Craig was my best friend from the time we were little kids. He was a wonderful person and when I heard the news about him, a piece of me died too. My heart goes out to his family and all of us who were touched by Craig Montano.

Craig was a great chum. We became friends over a period of several years, during a difficult time in my life. He had a contagious happy outlook on life and would pick up your spirits by just being in proximity. While coming from very different backgrounds, we pursued the same dream: to start our own brewery. We went to the same school, UC-Davis, and studied under the icon Prof. Michael Lewis. I had a head start on Craig having built a half dozen breweries.

Craig showed up at a brewery that I had been building in Chelsea. It was a very unconventional brewery. It was located on the 6th floor of what is now the Chelsea Market building. It was a 15-barrel process, as that was the largest vessel we could move up in the elevator. We shared the space with a bridal gown factory. It was a real hoot to brew beer and watch a crew of women gluing bridal veils together.

Craig walks in one day and is looking for a job. We instantly connected. I ordered the boss to hire him. I needed someone like Craig. Those couple years working together will always be special to me. What fun we had. We had a cat to keep the rodents out of the grain that was named Brewsky Hops. Brewsky did his job well. However, this cat somehow figured out how to score on the suds. We walled off the formentors, but somehow he would get his bellyful of beer. The cat was stoned drunk all the time.

The brewery won a few awards. That was Craig's work. He developed quickly into a very good brewer. He took over my job after I got fired. I was losing it at the time and deserved to be fired. I would still come in and work for free, I did so because I could not stop brewing, and because of my need to be with my only friend in the city.

I thank god for bringing Craig into my life. I was about to drown and this guy was my lifesaver. He was my best friend. There was not one day after 9/11 that I would not wake up crying. This went on for years. I am crying now.

When I think of Craig Montano, I think of Lawrence Darrow of the "Razor's Edge" (W. Somerset Maugham). I tried to write it from memory, but my memory fails me. It is something like this: Nobody knows this person well in the famous sense, but he has profoundly affected others in a way that he is considered a truly remarkable creature. You must read "Razor's Edge."

Craig, my good friend, you live forever in my memory. We will meet again.

Craig was a fabulous person, I remember him well as a talented painting contractor and saw him last about the time he received his new position with Cantor-Fitzgerald.... Our prayers are with the Montano family, and today is Oct 19th 2006. He will always be in our thoughts.

I knew Craig when he first moved to Glen Ridge.  He was a first time soccer coach and I was the first time assistant for our daughters' first year in soccer.  He was a wonderful man and a good friend.  My heart goes out to his family.  I know this is long past his death, but I still think about him and his family all the time.

I just recently learned of Mr. Montano's death. My family and his were close when I was little in Cambria Heights. I am very sorry for his loss.

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.

Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!

9-11Heroes.us is a personal effort, not a business, nor is the site dedicated to any specific person or persons. We will not post negative comments. Moreover, 9-11Heroes.us reserves the right to choose which comments to post and also to edit the comments for spelling, punctuation, grammar, or edit comments that are unkind or offensive in some manner. The revenue goes back to maintaining this site.
