David Weiss was our soon-to-be brother-in-law. He was an amazing man and loved life. He was born on July 21--he and my son shared the same birthday, but you would of never forgot it, anyway.... My sister-in-law Kathy has two wonderful children, and David embraced those children as if his own. I remember when Craig was going to be an eagle scout, and he and David took up a project to clear a park--an impossible misson, but with team work they achieved it.... And Megan our Foofie.... Always said Megan would have the most amazing sweet 16.... He made her that promise! She did have the most amazing sweet 16, but he wasn't here to see it--my sister-in-law, while in morning for her lost dear heart, made sure the party went on. That's what Dave would have wanted.... And my sister-in-law made sure the people Dave touched would never forget him or his spirit. In the town of Maybrook, NY is a memorial park in his memory, and every day Dave's dog Butch runs in that memorial park with Kathy. I think Dave wouldn't have minded his dog being there every day. The man was a truly genuine person, and anyone who ever knew him was truly touched by him. I know a day don't go by where Kathy and the kids don't have a pleasant thought of him....
You'll never be forgotten. We love and miss you always.
Mike, Colleen, Danielle, and Christopher

That man in the East River was my uncle. I met David at the funeral for my uncle. He was the kindest, most caring person I had ever met. The way he jumped into that river to save my uncle with not even a second thought for his own life will forever make David my super hero. He was one of a kind.

During the summer of 2001, a television show called "The Bravest" shot almost 100 hours of tape, capturing everyday acts of courage by the men of Rescue 1. "Lots of heroic deeds are done here. Lots of heroic stuff that’s never said. More heroic than anything you can imagine," said Rescue 1 member Dave Weiss on one of those tapes. "I was born for fire fighting. I’m a legend. Ever since I was a kid, I knew what I wanted to do. Organized chaos is a fire situation and you can’t beat the action in Manhattan. The emergency work. The fires. The buildings. You don’t find this anywhere in the world."
Weiss, a New York City firefighter, was built like a fireplug. He stood 5-foot-9 and weighed 225 pounds. He was all muscle, with biceps as big as the thigh of a medium-build woman. He was bulldozer strong. He looked as tough as he sounded. His head was shaved and his body was covered in tattoos. He rode a Harley.
Born and raised in Freeport, NY, he joined the Freeport Fire Dept. in 1978 and the Ironworker's Union Local 580 in New York City. He was appointed to FDNY in 1989 and became a member of the elite Rescue Company 1 after receiving the Emily Trevor-Mary B. Warren Medal for Heroism in 1997, having rescued a man from the East River. A man's car careered off the FDR Drive and plunged into the East River. Dave, off duty, stopped his car, climbed down the iron trestles of the elevated highway and jumped into the river to rescue the driver, whose heart had given out. He just jumped, knowing that he was the person's only hope. In addition, during his 12-year career, Weiss was a recipient of other awards including The Fire Fighter's Quarterly Man Of The Year Award in 1993. He also received the New York City Transit Award.
David Martin Weiss, 41, of Maybrook, NY was declared missing on September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center Tower One. A memorial service was held at Central Synagogue, NYC on September 30, 2001. He is survived by his children, Michael and Alissa.

Post your memorial thoughts:
Share your feelings and memories of grief and
sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories. If you knew this
person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with
us something about his/her life:
- what kind of person he/she was,
- what nice points you remember about him/her,
- what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
- what you two perhaps did together,
- what he/she meant to you,
- or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging
for other people.
This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.
Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!
9-11Heroes.us is a personal effort, not a business, nor is the site dedicated to any specific person or persons. We will not post negative comments. Moreover, 9-11Heroes.us reserves the right to choose which comments to post and also to edit the comments for spelling, punctuation, grammar, or edit comments that are unkind or offensive in some manner.
