I was given your name as part of the 10th anniversary remembrance at Christ United Methodist Church in College Station, Texas. I have read about you and the wonderful comments that have been recorded on this site. You were a hero in life and afterwards. It is obbvious that you left this Earth early, but left a very solid and admirable legacy. I salute you and your family and thank you for your sacrifice. Paula from College Station, Tx

I worked with Dean for years when his was the analyst assigned to cover my firm. He was fair, funny and kind. He knew the investment business inside and out and had terrific judgment. We all rooted for him in the investor rankings where he excelled. He would chat a bit about his life away from work and we knew him to be a happy man who was devoted to his family. It was a privilege to know him.

When I moved to Westfield in fifth grade, Dean was one of the first buddies I met. He was a tremendous person. Dean, Brian Kinney and John Wallace and I spent eight years of childhood bliss in large part because of Dean's fabulous personality.  I was crushed when I heard of his passing. God Bless his family, they are in my prayers.

It is the ninth anniversary of 9-11. I remember how saddened I was to learn of your passing in the twin towers when it happened. When I met you at Prudential Securities, I was a young investment banker learning how to analyze various industries. The Equity Research Department at Prudential was such a cool place to learn in the 1990s. You, J. Clarence Morrison, John McMillan, and Lloyd Widom, among others, taught me a great deal, which we used effectively in the Investment Bank to compete for business. Thank you for your selfless patience and insights into the brokerage industry. May God bless you and your family.

Mike

I did not know of Dean until recently. As part of an English project, I read "The Names" by Billy Collins and read the name "Eberling" on line 6. I have since dedicated a fair amount of time to getting to know each person on the list within the poem and discover their individual stories. It has led me to many pictures and guestbooks in many different cities connected by tragedy. I believe that memory is a powerful thing and that the legacy which we leave supersedes any that we may have had on earth. Your name and your legacy certainly live on, as does your sacrifice.

I can only imagine how dearly you are missed, and I would like to say "thank you" first to you (Dean) for paying the price and also to your family, who gave you the courage to be a hero. Heroes are defined in a single moment, and it takes unmeasurable courage to choose an action such as you did in that moment. Thank you for your sacrifice, and thank you for your memory. This project has changed me forever!

It is a sad thing seeing the name of a man I never met in this place. I only recently learned he was related to me, but it was a connection way off in the past. It seems like he was a good man, so it makes my regret of not knowing him double.

I met Dean at the the investment firm of Putnam Lovell several years ago. I was extremely saddened to see his photo and hear his name yesterday during the memorial. Dean was a wonderful person, so down to earth and sincere. I was not surprised to learn that he lost his life while saving others. I am truly sorry but know that he has his place in heaven.

Uncle Dean was a man of great courage and lived his life to the fullest. As my uncle he taught me to go for what I want in life. My most memorable moments with him were the fishing trips we would take together with the rest of the family. If only you could have been here, Uncle Dean, you would see how I'm turning into a great fisherman like you were. Someday I will open your old fly fishing gear out and use it in remembrance of you.

I met Dean Eberling when I worked on the capital markets trading floor while at Smith Barney. What really struck me about him, was how down to earth he was, and how caring he was with his staff. You could see right away, through his staff's loyalty, that he was not like many of the ranked analysts. Working with many analysts, especially Ranked analysts, I immediately saw that Dean was a humble man with a lot of integrity and compassion. I remember how loving he was when he brought his daughters to visit the trading floor. I really got to know Dean, and his fortitude, when he left Smith Barney; this made such an impression on what a unique individual he was and we lost someone special.  While Dean was at Putnam Lovell, Dean was informed through my manager about an adversity in my life and he contacted me to see how I was doing. This thoughtfulness will never be forgotten.  During this tough time he was supportive and helped me realize my future career endeavors as a financial consultant. I feel he played a pivotal role in the formation of my career choice and am extremely appreciative. I will always remember his advice, to always remain true to myself and be persistent about your goals because you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. When I asked how I could repay him, he jested, "a burger from Burger Heaven". Those who know Dean will know how funny this sounds, but it was just like him. He made such a lasting impression. Dean was a good listener, encouraging, and a man filled with a lot of heart, integrity and passion for life. Dean is a hero in my book, and he died a hero. I will always remember him, and wish his family well.  Please keep in touch: sharon@sdwidman.com

With out a doubt, my Uncle Dean was one of the best influences in my life. He was also one of the best of friends to have. He and I started mountain biking together(I was his guide, due to a little more experience trail riding.) No one who came to know him would ever be able to forget him.

I was browsing a search engine to see how many other people shared the same last name and I found this sad page and would like to express how sad it is to hear that an Eberling was killed in 9-11.  I lost a sister and know how you can spend a lot of sad time playing the "what if" game.  I hope the best to whoever reads this. Dean, your family misses you so much.  Not a day goes by that we do not feel the void from your sudden departure.  You would be so proud of Amy and the girls.  They are strong and have each other to get through this horrible ordeal without you.
Cori, your daughter, has celebrated her 16th birthday.  She is smart, bright, and attractive.  She has a part time job and is extremely responsible.  Lauren, your youngest, is 12.  She continues to be athlectic.  She's involved in Irish dancing, softball, and basketball.  She shares your love for bike riding and M & M's. Amy, your wife, is amazing.  She stays strong for the girls because you encouraged her to be a take charge person throughout your 19 years marriage together.
Please continue to watch over them and guide them through this unpredictable journey called life.
We love and miss you very much.  I'm proud to call you
a devoted family man, top rated analyst, athlete,
family member, friend,and a hero.
Love,
Bunny

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.

Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!

9-11Heroes.us is a personal effort, not a business, nor is the site dedicated to any specific person or persons. We will not post negative comments. Moreover, 9-11Heroes.us reserves the right to choose which comments to post and also to edit the comments for spelling, punctuation, grammar, or edit comments that are unkind or offensive in some manner.
