I never knew Doug. I couldnt have cos I live half the world away. However, I did read about him after the 911. Doug, you are brave and you made a wonderful family which you unfortunately left behind.Your life touched mine and my marriage and I have learnt to pay more attention to my family. You really are my hero!

I grew up during the summers on Fire Island and was fortunate to have a large group of friends that I keep in touch with to this day. Doug and his crew were about seven years older than we were, and we idolized them. They taught us the alphabet in the sand one summer when we were very little and plenty of other stuff as we got older. They taught us how to compete ferociously, lose graciously, and win magnanimously, lessons I hope to pass along to my children some day. I have so many memories of Doug with his huge serve on the tennis court, his hearty laugh, and his gentle nature.

The last time I saw Doug, uncharacteristically, was during the winter in Central Park, where he and his wife and their children were taking a family picture. As I understand it, the morning of 9-11 he was having breakfast with one of his Fire Island friends, Doug Gurian; it brings me a small sense of comfort to know that they were together at the end. I don't know why I have been thinking about those guys recently, maybe because now I'm older than they were on that day, which is really hard to get my head around.... Anyway, for me and my Fire Island friends, whom they influenced in such a positive way, the names Doug Gardner and Doug Gurian will live forever.

The last I heard about Doug was that he was going off to Haverford. I taught tennis in Seaview, Fire Island, from '76-'79, so I saw a lot of Doug in his teen years. His heart even then was huge, and his laugh infectious. He was a great kid to have around the courts. When I heard not long ago from my brother that my niece indeed did love Haverford ... and yes, it was a wonderful college, but the most amazing thing about it is the "Doogie" (sp?), named after some guy named Gardner, who died in 9-11, my heart skipped a beat, and I shed more than a few tears, not for Doug, who I'm sure lived as fully as he did the four summers that I saw him daily, but for his family and friends. My heart goes out to you all, even after all these years.

Doug was my classmate and friend at Haverford College, and I speak for all of us from the Class of '83 who knew him and loved him, that he will always be remembered as a great friend, man, and father whose life was unfairly shortened. When I think of Doug, he is always smiling.

I knew Doug from Fire Island since we were about 10 years old. We quickly became friends. We were from different towns and often had heated softball and basketball games against each other. No matter the outcome, we always walked off friendly, with the loser graciously congratulating the winner. I hadn't seen him much as we got older and spent less time at the beach, but I will never forget him and the value of his friendship.

I did not know Doug but did some work on behalf of the family, the scope of which I would never reveal. I had the privilege of speaking on 4 or 5 occasions with Doug's father, Joseph. I have never met, in the totality of my life to that point (pre-kids), a man who loved a son more than this man loved Doug Gardner. I was moved, beyond words, by the love, and loyalty, and devotion, and pride, and warmth, and absolute joy this son provided this man, and this man provided this son. My daughters never go a day, nor a minute, nor a second without knowing how much I love them. I think Mr. Gardner had something to do with that.

My favorite memory of my cousin Doug is of him pulling me in a wagon down to the beach at Fire Island to take me swimming off the docks. He would talk to me like I was one of his friends, even though he was so much older than I was. He was so loving and caring with me, and I truly idolized him. His smile was so warm and could make everyone else smile, too. He was truly a wonderful person.

Although it has been almost six years, you are never far from my thoughts and always in my heart. I miss your gentle voice every day. Your children are a testament to the man you were--your kindness, intelligence and generous spirit shine brightly through them both. I am forever grateful that we loved each other and lived a lifetime together in such a short time. It wasn't enough, but those who loved you and were loved by you carry you with them today and always.

I recently purchased a flag with Doug's name on it at the Healing Field in West Des Moines, IA. It was a very touching display of 3000 flags with everyone having their name on a yellow ribbon on the flag telling where they parished. I bought a flag for all of my children. A very touching experience. Wonderful to have a memory of that devasting day. God Bless.

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.

Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!
