I have re-posted my tribute to Eskedar on my blog today, the ninth anniversary. I will continue to do so on every 9/11 to come. I don't ever want her light to dim.... I want everyone to remember her. I did a little more research and found out that the floors of the company she worked for were in the "hit" zone of the first plane, and everyone who worked there perished. I have been watching all of the programs today dedicated to that horrific day, and I felt a close bond to her spirit, knowing she was in there. Knowing where she was makes it even more real to me, nine years later.

I do not personally know Eskedar Melaku, but coming from an Ethiopian family, I can understand how they were hurt. Although I don't think we understand everything about the attacks, it is still very sad to see our fellow Ethiopians and the community in sorrow. May she rest in peace, and may her family cope with this disaster.

I am a member of the 2009 Project for remembering the victims of the 9/11 attack. Ms. Melaku's name was assigned to me. I was so blessed not to lose anyone I love or know in that horrendous tragedy but that doesn't mean I didn't grieve deeply for everyone whose lives it did touch. I said many prayers at the time for all of them, and I still do as this time of year comes around again. The first link I went to when I typed Eskedar's name into a search showed a beautiful photo of her face, so kind and open and gracious. As I've been reading about her this morning as I get ready to write my tribute to her on my blog I am amazed at how fresh the emotions of 9/11 still are in me, eight years later. I'm sure I would've loved Eskedar if I'd had the pleasure of ever meeting her. She has become very real to me today and I hope I am able to do her justice in my tribute.

In my thoughts always...

I just moved to the New Jersey/New York area. I friend took me to a park in Jersey where they have a 9/11 memorial. It has a listing of everyone that perished that day. I thought to myself, "I wonder if I can find an Ethiopian among the thousands of names engraved on this memorial." Then I came across the name ESKEDAR MELAKU. I do not know her, just wanted to say, "May God bless her soul..."

Esku,

Happy (Ethiopian) New year! CNN was broadcasting the whole wknd, the life story of the guy responsible for what happened to you. It is so sad that the victims are less known of than the criminal in this world, but in our hearts you're always the hero whose love and dedication could not be forgotten.

Thanks for being in our hearts!

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.

Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!
