In Memory Of Esmerlin Salcedo

One of my co-bloggers and friend, RonnnysGirl at My country-My View, sent me a link in which Bloggers across the world were participating in The 2,996 Project. The main goal of this project is to have bloggers sign up to pay tribute to a life lost during one of Americas darkest days in history, September 11th, 2001.

This year will be the 5th anniversary and it’s heart wrenching to sit back and take a mental trip back to that fateful day. We may think we put those memories away and have dealt with the pain, loss and anger of the attack on America, but the memories, the images remain vivid in our hearts.

I remember coming home early that day from a long night shift only to be woken up by my work beeper. I remember turning on the television and watching the first WTC tower burning and watching in a frozen awe as the second tower was hit by the airliner and forgetting all about the beeper that continuously went off one call after another advising me that our law enforcement agency was in a state of high alert and to stand by for further instructions.

I remember telling my mom that I didn’t believe the towers would hold up under horrific destruction and no sooner than I said those words the first tower collapsed in front of my eyes and my emotions went from one extreme to another and cried for all the lives lost, their families, what was happening to my country, and what this act of terror would mean to the future of not only my country, but countries around the world.

Unknowingly, while many of us were watching television as this tragedy unfolded before our eyes, in New York City, a Mr. Esmerlin Antonio Salcedo, a security officer for the WTC Towers had abruptly gone down to the attack site on his day off and did what he was trained to do, protect and serve. He, like many others worked hard to save as many people who were trapped in those burning buildings and lastly saved a fellow security officer before returning into the building to an under ground command station, only to never be seen again.

Mr. Esmerlin Antonio Salcedo was 36 years old. A beloved husband and father of four. He was a few weeks away from graduating with a computer programming degree and it has even been said he wanted a future in law enforcement.

What he did for those trapped victims was a remarkable display of heroism, and required great courage. From articles that I’ve read, some feel that Salcedo didn’t receive the recognition he deserved, nor was the family of Salcedo compensated fairly due to the fact that he was off duty. What so many fail to comprehend, is that no matter what uniform you are wearing, to protect and serve is a moral commitment one makes and that same commitment is applied to every aspect of your life and not just between the hours of 9-5. It is true that most of our nation walks ignorant of the life that was sacrificed so that others might live, but I want everyone to know that there is one more person out there who walks with the deepest respect and admiration for Esmerlin Antonio Salcedo.

Very little is known of Esmerlin Antonio Salcedo and if I had to describe Salcedos recipe for life it would be the following.

" Hold on to what is good, even if it is a handful of earth. Hold on to what you believe, even if it is a tree that stands alone. Hold on to what you must do, even if it is a long way from home. Hold on to life, even when it is easier to let go. Hold on to my hand, even when I have gone away from you."

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.

Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!

9-11Heroes.us is a personal effort, not a business, nor is the site dedicated to any specific person or persons. We will not post negative comments. Moreover, 9-11Heroes.us reserves the right to choose which comments to post and also to edit the comments for spelling, punctuation, grammar, or edit comments that are unkind or offensive in some manner. We are maintaining this site with our own money and time. We try to keep the advertisements to a minimum and we try to make them as unobtrusive as possible. The revenue goes back to maintaining this site.

Thank you for your understanding in these matters.
