It was a honor to have served with you at VF-302. I remember a few times being part of the launch crew when you were on the flight line getting ready for a flight. I was heart broken and taken aback when I had found out you were part of the AA Flight 11 crew. When we spoke or interacted at the squadron, you treated me and others with respect. You are sorely missed LCDR. McGuinness.

To the MCGuiness Family
We knew your family when you lived in San Diego and my Mom, "Grandma Jo" cared for Tommy.
Our hearts still ache for your great loss. Eventhough Tom left us much to soon on that fateful day, we know his spirit still surrounds us. Peace and love and know that you are forever in our hearts. Sandie Seifert and family

I have few memories of Tom, however they were always extremely pleasant. I was close friends with his daughter Jennifer years ago when they lived in Fallbrook and from my own encounters with her dad Tom in addition to the stories I always heard regarding him, Tom was such a wonderful, loving, caring, father and person. When you talked to him you could just tell that he was genuine and that he sincerely cared about people; his family especially. He is truley a hero and someone I think of often and not only on September 11th. Tom and his family remain always and forever in my heart with very fond memories. I Love you McGuinness family. Tom rests in honor and extreme respect.

Love Always,

Shanna Hornbeck

God bless you, Tom. Though I never knew you, I and our entire nation honors your memory today on your birthday. I am confident you are experiencing perfect peace with the Lord, and I pray that His peace may also be extended to your family once again this weekend as the world somberly reflects on your sacrifice in the cause of duty. You are not forgotten--you are honored and loved.

Tommy, you were such a cute kid with a raspy voice and a rascal well. I remember the pool over at your house, and you coming to our house with your cute sister Cathy, where our parents would play cards and my mom would make your mom spaghetti and meatballs. You were such a kind and gentle soul, a wonderful friend, son, husband and father, who deserved so very much more. I wrote a tribute to you Tommy a couple of years ago as this touched me so much, and sent it to your mom. It was the hardest thing I ever wrote. It was the saddest thing I ever wrote. You deserved so much better than that, but I thank you for being a hero and know you are with Christ in heaven. God Bless you Tommy, you will be remembered for your heroics and the way you lived life for many many years to come.
Love, Ned.

I knew you as my cousin Tommy — Tom was your dad, my Uncle Tom. I was seven years older, and we only saw each other at family gatherings, as we grew up in different towns. I guess I was 17 and you were 10 or 11 when we saw each other last, probably at Grandma's house in Needham, MA. I left Massachusetts after that and moved to Hawaii for 30 plus years, until just after 9/11. I saw your name on the TV screen, and only after a week's research did I confirm that my little cousin Tommy was the victim of such a senseless tragedy. At the time I wrote a note to my little girls, then 5 and 8, telling them what I remembered about you. In short, I summed it up by saying you were a great kid, and I was sure you had turned into a great man, too. I was not wrong. I hope that Cheryl, Jennifer, and Tommy gain some strength from this reiteration that your dad and husband was truly an awesome man, and loved by many.

As I write this, our President is telling us that Bin Ladin has been found and executed, and that it is a victory for us. I am sorry. I cannot see it as much of a victory. But God does not explain — our job is to have faith and honor the memory of those whom He somehow inexplicably chooses to call home early.

Although I did not know Thomas, I've just seen the dedication to him in the book "Grumman F-14 Tomcat Bye Bye Baby...!"
Tomcatter extraordinaire! He looked to be an awesome pilot. God bless.

I know Jennifer McGuinness from Winning Ways Stable. She's such a great and talented person. I am glad to know her and her family from showing horses. They are a truly extraordinary family. The McGuinness' show that even in the darkest of days, God will always be there. Keep the faith, and God bless.

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
