While visiting home for my mothers 80th birthday, I ran across Scot Ducan and as we talked I asked if he had ever heard from Gary Bird. I was shocked to hear that he had died in the World Trade Center bombing. Gary, Randy Paulson, and I ran around together the last couple years of high school in Kingman. Although I did not feel to be in the same league as him, we were good friends. Ready about his accomplishments and his family sounds just like the young man I knew. We had only met once since high school at a reunion but it was like old times. Although we lost contact, I will miss him.

Gary was our Senior Year High School Class President. He had this wonderful smile and was so kind and considerate towards everyone. We held our 40th class reunion last year and had fun sharing school and class memories related to Gary. To date, we have lost 19 members from the Class of 1968 from Mohave County Union High School in Kingman, AZ. I'm sure Gary has already organized a some type of gathering for all of them. I'll pass this on to others so we can get lots of flowere for Gary.

We went to school with Gary at good old MCUHS (“Mucus” to those of us who attended it, and Mohave County Union High School for those of you who didn’t) in Kingman, Arizona. He was just an all-around nice guy. When my husband and I found out he had died in one of the towers, it really hit home to us. Before we were grieving for strangers, but now we were grieving for one of our own. But when we found this site, we felt that we could finally tell Gary a proper goodbye. Our hearts go out to his family for their great, great loss. God be with you, Gary.

Gary was a classmate of my younger sister, Nancy, when he went to school in Kingman. When we visited Ground Zero in NYC two years after the attack, we left flowers there for Gary. He is not forgotten.

I came across this page by while Googling another Gary Bird, a British journalist. I am very glad I visited. It just goes to show, you never know who is, or will be, thinking about you and your pain.

Mr. Bird,
You were the only person from our state to perish that horrible day and I just want you to know that our 911 Memorial was opened today and it is beautiful. Your family was there and I know they miss you terribly and are very proud of you. I am sorry you're gone, please know that we will never forget you and pray for you daily.

Gary was steadfast in his efforts to represent fairness in the workers' compensation systems across the nation. I knew Gary as a member of the New Mexico Self Insurers' Guarantee Fund Association, a member of the Western Association of Workers' Compensation Boards (WAWCB), and an associate member of the International Association of Industrial Accident Boards and Commissions (IAIABC).
Gary and I worked together on a variety of self-insurance issues. I both regulated his prior employer and worked with him on assuring the integrity of the Self-Insurance Guarantee Fund in NM. He was very good at his work and worked well with others.
It is highly ironic that his life was snuffed out in one of the worst workers' compensation disasters in the history of our nation.
Stephen W. Kennedy, Director
New Mexico Workers' Compensation Admistration
May 1995 - June 1999)

Post your memorial thoughts:
Share your feelings and memories of grief and
sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories. If you knew this
person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with
us something about his/her life:
- what kind of person he/she was,
- what nice points you remember about him/her,
- what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
- what you two perhaps did together,
- what he/she meant to you,
- or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging
for other people.
This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.
Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!
9-11Heroes.us is a personal effort, not a business, nor is the site dedicated to any specific person or persons. We will not post negative comments. Moreover, 9-11Heroes.us reserves the right to choose which comments to post and also to edit the comments for spelling, punctuation, grammar, or edit comments that are unkind or offensive in some manner. We are maintaining this site with our own money and time. We try to keep the advertisements to a minimum and we try to make them as unobtrusive as possible. The revenue goes back to maintaining this site.
