My name is Carlee W. and I go to Skokie school. My grandpa was in the twin towers when the plane crashed. He got out because of the firefighters! It’s because of people like James that many people are still alive. They helped people go down the stairs and find the closest way out of the towers!
I read about James in an article the other day and since we are supposed to write to one of our heroes and I think James is one of them. He was one of the many heroes that risked their lives trying to save other people! Those people to me are heroes!
Thank you!
-Carlee

Jimmy was my schoolmate and the captain of our wrestling team. He was an outstanding individual in every way. The world was a better place with James in it, and now Heaven is better with him there.

Tonight we remembered your life, and the lives of all those lost because of the 9/11 attacks. I held a small light with your name on it. There were lights all over the stadium, each light had the name of a victim of 9/11. God bless all the victims and families of 9/11.

I knew Jimmy because I was friends with his daughters. He was an amazing loving father and his kids adored him. I remember the days following 9/11 just waiting at the house, and hoping with them that we would hear from Jimmy or that he was found. Sadly that call did not come. I am sorry I did not remain close with his daughters and I hope everything has gone well for them over the years and I just want the Amato family to know you are in my thoughts and prayers.

All my love to the Amato family on this weekend of remembrance and always.

i wish that I had been able to meet captain james amato, but I can say that I see, through his family, what a loving man he was. I feel honored to have grown close with the amato family these last few years...they are beautiful people. for that reason, I will always respect (as so many people do) the bravery and selflessness that james amato practiced in life.

the amato family is always in my thoughts.

Dear Jimmy,

I will remember you. I live in the city, and each time I walk past the ufa, I see your pics. My, how you changed from Connectquot HS! Missing you! R.I.P. My father was an ironworker at the WTC. A very sad day for our world. Peace.

With Love,
Rita

Mr. Amato was loved by so many. I am sorry I never met him, but I dedicated mile #58 of my goal to complete a mile for every victim of 9/11. You are missed.

I met Jim and his friend, Jim Delise, in the early '80s. He was a great guy. Very handsome and great personality. Everybody who met him loved him. I live in North Carolina, and he came down to visit us several times, and we got to meet his wife, Debbie, too. Every September 11th, I think about him and his family. What a huge and devastating loss!

Jim Amato was a hero to my mom and I. He was also the warmest and most kind person there was. He always made me smile at the Kingdom Hall and loved to volunteer at any events, which inspired me. He was a good father to all of his children and was loved by all. Jim, I cant wait to see you again. Just know that my mom and I love and miss you very much. You are a true hero.

Jim was my roommate in 1981 along with three other Jims in a house dubbed the Jimnasium. I remember him applying for a job with the NYFD. I lost touch by the time he was lost to all, but I think of him often, especially today on the ninth anniversary. I am proud to have known him. I remember him as a gentle giant. Rest in peace, Jimmy, you are in our thoughts.

I just got back from Iraq and was surfing the web when I ran across the fact that Jimmy was killed on 9/11. I grew up across the street from Jimmy. His brother John was my friend for years, and I went to sleep at night listening to Lee's piano playing. I will always remember what a great family they were — boys being boys. I never knew him as an adult, but I am sure he was wonderful.... Rest in peace.

Well, Tara got engaged last week, and I can't help but think about Jim ... and Deb and Tara—his first daughter getting married. What would Jim think of Pete? What advice would he give them? And how handsome they would have been walking down the aisle, Jim as the proud dad, and Tara his beautiful daughter. And then there's the PARTY. Jim was always the life of the party. It's a great time to reflect on Jim and all the blessings he would have wanted to share with his daughter and new son-in-law. I know he will be there ... as he always is, in our hearts.

I wish I could have met Mr. Amato. He has an amazing and loving family. One of his children has inspired me and helped me in ways I never thought possible. Even though she and I are no longer friends, still I am eternally thankful for that. Rest in peace, and know that you and your family are always in my prayers.

I'm an Amato, and I remember just a little of my uncle, but it's still so much in my mind. I loved him so very much! And I still do. He was an amazing hard worker. I love talking about him, and I can't wait to see him in paradise. Things have changed. Every time I think about him, I start to wanna cry because he was about everything to me and my family. I can't wait to see my hero and the person I look up to again. =) Not only was he an uncle to me, he was also a dad. He was loving, very funny, and always comforting. I miss my family so very much.
I love you, Uncle Jimmy, with all my heart. You're always in my memories now and forever!

Your niece,
Alexandra

I will never be able to see how anyone could have benefited from the murder of Capt. James Amato. I pray that James Amato rests in peace, that Capt Amato's family and friends find comfort and that God continues to Bless America. I would like to know when Capt Amato's birthday is, so that I can acknowledge it when it comes around again. Thanks!

Well, it's been 5 years now and boy has life changed. I've been married now for over 3 years, and Jim never got to meet my lovely wife, Emily. I've told her alot about what a great man he was, and she looks forward to meeting him someday in paradise. I loved Jim and think about him often. He is truly missed, but I am comforted knowing that I will see him again.

Amato family, if you're reading this, I want to let you know that not only do I miss Jim, but I also miss the whole family. I miss the way it used to be when I could come over and hang out with the whole family - Jim, Debbie, Sean, Tara, Katherine, and Ashley all together in the house on 5th St in Ronkonkoma.

To my "little sisters" Tara, Katherine, and Ashley, you know I love you all sincerely from the bottom of my heart and I will always be there for you. We have lost touch, though, which is sad, please give me a call. My cell number is still the same.

To Sean - love you bro, call me anytime you wanna talk.

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.

Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!
