I picked John Moran to pray for this week at Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Lake Tahoe. I have a picture of John and some background on his life and family. Best regards to his family and friends.

I was a childhood friend of Mona and Ellen and remember spending time with your family in Rockaway Beach. I just want you to know that I think of you all today and often and pray that John rest in peace. For your Mom, I pray she to finds peace in her heart. I will always remember.

I knew John at Fordham Law where he went to school at night. He was brilliant and made the top honor of Editor on the Law Review. I got to know him better later at the Wagner School at NYU. He was friendly, funny and helpful. He wanted to use all of that education in the NYFD and was proud to be a fireman. I was very sad to learn that he was in the buildings on 9/11, but not surprised. My heart goes out to his family - his was a great loss.

Every once in a while Battalion Chief Moran pops into my head--maybe a promise to never forget such a wonderful man. We met at a building vacate in Brooklyn when he still worked out of Battalion 39. He was amazing with those people being vacated and with his men under his command. I saw him several times after that, and he is one person that I occasionally think about. The last time I saw him was at the firehouse on Lincoln Ave, and it was his last day at that firehouse. His men were preparing a great feast for him, and he dropped his keys in the sewer. Great person - GREAT MAN!

John was one of the nicest guys I knew when I was in high school. I dated one of his sister's friends, and we hung out as part of a large, ever-shifting group in Rockaway Beach. My memories of John from 1973 through '77 or so are just how much he used to laugh when we were together -- it was infectious. John was the kind of guy you wanted to have around. There was a time during those years that I wanted more than anything else to play rock and roll in a band. John was the first guy -- the very first -- I ever jammed with. Non-musicians will have to take this on faith: this is a profoundly significant memory. We jammed on and off for a couple of years, and John was so encouraging about my playing that I actually went ahead and started a band some time later. I tried numerous times to get him to play with us, but he always declined. (He was a great bass player.) Anyway, John meant a lot to me at that time, and I was so sad to learn that we lost him in the attack. My brother-in-law is an FDNY Battalion Chief (Tommy Van Doren), and he tells me that the 40-year-old John Moran was just as likeable as the 18-year-old John Moran. I'm a better person for having known him. I mean that. Mona, if you're reading this, please know my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I've wanted to reach out in some way for five years, but was too complacent.

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.

Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!

9-11Heroes.us is a personal effort, not a business, nor is the site dedicated to any specific person or persons. We will not post negative comments. Moreover, 9-11Heroes.us reserves the right to choose which comments to post and also to edit the comments for spelling, punctuation, grammar, or edit comments that are unkind or offensive in some manner.
