I grew up next door to the McErlean family in Mahasset. They were wonderful people and Marie, Johns grandmother was my God mother. I met him when he was a little boy living in the city. Angnes and Jack were great parents.. I was stunned and deeply saddened when I read his name amoung those who had perished. I send my prayers and thoughts to that dear family.. I go every year to New York and without fail visit Ground Zero. I look forward to seeing his name on carved in bronze this year.

Johnny Mac,
10 years have passed and I can still hear your laugh like it was yesterday. Your goddaughter Kelly has started college and I know you will keep looking out for her. You will always be in our prayers.

I too, did not know him, but I knew his sister. Ten years later, it still hurts...God bless the USA.

Hopewell Township and the Patriot Day Committee is hosting a 9 11 Rememberance for residents of Bridgeton als of all the Western side of Cumberland County on Sunday, September 11. On behalf of John Thomas McErlean, Jr. I planted a flag at the Cumberland Valve. I was given a certificate of rememberance for him. I am a teacher at Bridgeton High School and many of my students are in the ROTC and will be performing on Sunday. I am so proud of my students and proud to be an American.

I did not know John Thomas McErlean. I came to know and read about him because my granddaughter, whose last name is McErlean, was due on his birthday. Also, the McErlean name is unique. I am told my grandbaby is a distant relative of his because her family on her father's side is from New York. I can only hope that she has some of the traits and personality from this heritage and becomes a little like this remarkable man I've come to know through the Internet.  My grandbaby will know about this man. I tell her often that her MawMaw will tell her all about September 11 when she is old enough. She is 14 months now. God bless your family.

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.

Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!

9-11Heroes.us is a personal effort, not a business, nor is the site dedicated to any specific person or persons. We will not post negative comments. Moreover, 9-11Heroes.us reserves the right to choose which comments to post and also to edit the comments for spelling, punctuation, grammar, or edit comments that are unkind or offensive in some manner. We are maintaining this site with our own money and time. We try to keep the advertisements to a minimum and we try to make them as unobtrusive as possible. The revenue goes back to maintaining this site.
