I live in Sheffield, England. I've just watched the TV documentary, "The Falling Man." I also watched the live broadcasting on that 9/11 day. As I write this, I cry my tears for all who perished and for all their families. I can say Jesus knew he was to die and walked that way. All those that jumped were very brave and knew god was with them. May god be with you; god bless you all; god bless Johnathan Briley.

Now that I know your name, I am glad, as that image has haunted me for years, only because of some perverted photographer and the media. However, now I can rest assured that you are in peace, and you were a good man with a loving heart. You did what I would have done in your position. My heart is with your family and friends. May God be with you.

The words spoken by Jonathan's sister about how we should not try so hard to find who the falling man is, as much as we should seek to know who we, ourselves, are through him. This is a profound and beautiful thought. I tried hard to imagine the heart and mindset of the falling man, and I do not think of what he did as suicide, nor do I believe that God does, either. When a lion chases you off a cliff, this is not suicide. This is tragedy. I, for one, see myself, my human, mortal, and fragile life in a more precious light after considering the struggle of the falling man. If nothing else, this man has touched many, many lives. He certainly must be in an even higher place now that he was in that building that day. Bless us all, particularly the families of the victims of 911.

May the angels always be there to guide and protect you, and may God always hold you all in the palm of His right hand.

They say when death comes, each of us must take that walk alone. None of us can say what we would do when faced with the inevitable. The truest test of faith is to put yourself in God's hands. I believe that even in the face of death, you were at peace in God's promise of a better place. You will not be forgotten.

You can see a good spirit in the eyes and smile of Jonathan. He would never be a stranger in a room of people he didn't know. I never met him but I know who's hands his in. I know. Peace and Blessings to his wife, parents and his sisters and brothers. Gail

I just wanted to say that Johnathan's sister touched my heart last night as I watched "The Falling Man." He must have been a wonderful person to have been in such a seemingly loving, insightful, and truly faithful family. I will think of him often and pray for all of you. God bless you.

God Bless You, Jonathan, I just found out who you were and now have a face to a man who was so full of life. May you rest in peace in Jesus' name, amen.

I came to hear of Jonathan through the 'Falling Man' programme that I watched last night. I just wanted to say that you should be truly proud. He seemed like a lovely guy that was loved by all that knew him. It would've taken a very brave man to do what it appears he did. That image sums up that day for me, and that image is something I will never forget

I was introduced to Jonathan through the "Falling Man" video online. The Falling Man strikes me as extremely brave, taking his life into his own hands, flying in peace and surrender, in an almost fetal position - he was returning to where he came, and he knew God was carrying him home, just as he sent him here as a baby to love. No matter whether Jonathan is the Falling Man or not, I know he is at peace now and in heaven, as are all the victims of 9-11. Thank you for sharing him with us and for the insightful, spiritual, brave comments that were made in the "Falling Man" film. God bless you all--your strength and wisdom are my inspiration.

[Ed. - I am French. Yesterday, I re-examined the images of the victims who in desperation preferred to jump rather than to suffer. I try to imagine that one second, what could have been at that very moment, although we're not, but this act of personal heroism will never be able to be forgotten by their loved ones, and they'll be remembered for their bravery and the happiness which they could bring them. My sincere homage to all of them.]

God Bless.

—Eric P. (Paris, France)

[Ed. - "Like many French people, I happened to come across the English documentary, “The Falling Man,” on TV. And every time the same anguish and the same sadness at the fate of the innocent victims of 9-11-2001! Jonathan, the lack of courage or despair drove you to the irrevocable (?). How I would have loved to meet someone like you, so good and so noble. You didn’t deserve anything like that; no one deserves such an end. I hope that heaven has welcomed you as a saint, the saint of saints from this really sad day. Rest in peace.  May your family also be comforted by now. I’ll pray for you and all the others."]

Eric

I LIVE OUTSIDE OF PARIS FRANCE AND JUST WATCHED A DOCUMENTARY CONCERNING THE FALLING MAN. I HAVE ALWAYS WONDERED ABOUT THE BRAVE SOULS THAT DECIDED TO TAKE BUISNESS IN TO THEIR OWN HANDS. I FEEL THAT THE THOUGHTS HAD TO HAVE BEEN AT THAT TIME, TO MORE OR LESS TRY TO MAKE A RUN FOR IT. TO TRY AND DO SOMETHING THAT COULD POSSIBLY SUCCEED. I BELIEVE THAT ALL THE WONDERFUL PEOPLE WHO TOOK THAT LEAP WERE ACTUALLY LEAPING ON A WING AND A PRAYER IN HOPES FOR A MIRACLE. MAY JONATHAN REST IN PEACE AND MAY YOU ALL CONTINUE TO WALK IN GODS BLESSINGS. MY HEART GOES OUT TO THE BRILEY FAMILY

May his brave & valiant soul rest in peace. God Bless.

I too watched the 'falling man' documentary on UK television with great sadness. On 9/11 I was at work in England and will always remember the stunned silence that engulfed my usually busy office when the first images arrived. Our World became a more frightening place that day. God bless Jonathan and his family.

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.

Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!
