Still Waiting for Joe
There are places on this planet that emit strange and unexplainable energies. One such is a sacred site known as Maumean, high in the mountains of Connemara.
This has long been a place of pilgrimage. It contains a Mass rock, a holy well and crudely fashioned Stations of the Cross.
These are located beside an old path that meanders up to the pass in the Maamturk Mountains. Along this route refugees from hunger trailed their desperation in the time of the Great Famine. Hungry grass is still said to grow here on the slopes of Maumean. Pilgrims claim to see shadows move amongst the lichen stained stones. It is a place of ghosts.

I remember seeing you almost every time that my grandfather would take me down to the firehouse. Almost everyone knew someone who passed that day, and sadly it was you. My grandparents and I, and the rest of the department, were saddened by the loss, but you will forever live on inside us all.

I saw you on "102 Minutes" yesterday, and you looked so brave. You were looking up at the twin towers, and I can't imagine what you must have been thinking. Another year has now passed, and we remember once again. I mention you every year in my teaching, and I show my students your picture. God bless you, Joe!

My name is Geremy Milner and I'm a firefighter in Golden, CO (Fairmount Fire Department). The date is 9-11-10 and this morning I completed a 110 story stair climb at the Quest Building in Denver in honor of the heroes of that awful day. Joe is the particular firefighter that I climbed for today, in his honor. As I climbed I wore a picture of Joe around my neck and looked down at it numerous times, remembering him. If Joe's parents happen to see this post I would just like to tell them that Joe hasn't been forgotten and he NEVER will be. God bless you guys and thanks Joe, for your unselfish efforts on that day.

You looked very calm and brave in the video shown during most of the 9/11 documentaries that were on television. I never realized it was you until recently. You carried yourself very well under very perilous conditions. Your courage was captured for the world to see. It's a great honor to call you a family member. You are a great Irishman.

Joe was a great kid and a grew to be a great man. I lived directly across the street from Joe all his life. I watched him play fireman when he was little and was so proud of him when he got his dream. He was a brave and wonderful man who will forever be remembered as the hero that he was. His family was one of the most important in my life growing up. I still consider them all my family. Tragedy hit the Hunter family years early with their first born, daughter Margaret, and I was so lucky to have had to chance to know both Margaret and Joseph as well as the rest of the family. Joe is missed so much in South Hempstead and by all who ever met him. The Fire Department was his life and love for so long that it is only fitting that he would be taken from us doing what he loved to do and saving so many lives. He is a true hero and will never be forgotten. I look forward to seeing him again one day and telling him myself how proud I was to know him and be his friend.

Post your memorial thoughts:
Share your feelings and memories of grief and
sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories. If you knew this
person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with
us something about his/her life:
- what kind of person he/she was,
- what nice points you remember about him/her,
- what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
- what you two perhaps did together,
- what he/she meant to you,
- or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging
for other people.
This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.
Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!
