I am a military member serving overseas. Yesterday, in support of the 9-11 10th anniversary coming up, our squadron ran a 5K in memory of all of the victims that we lost on that tragic day. Ultimately we were running for All of the people who gave their life that day, but at the same time, we each got the name of a specific person to run in the honor of.. The name I received was Joeseph J. Zuccala. So I just wanted to let everyone who reads this know that he is not forgotten. Ten years later, all over the world, people who never even knew him are still remembering him, and the thousands of others we lost that day. My thoughts and prayers go out to his whole family and all of his friends.... We will never forget.

Joe and I, as young 2LTs in the Army, were assigned as OICs of military funeral teams in early 1969. We were both assigned to Ft. Knox at the time and our two teams traveled Ohio, providing military honors, mostly to funerals of Vietnam casualties. A high honor, although not fun duty, to be sure, but Joe's good humor during our training helped keep it more tolerable.
He told us what his nickname had been in college, so I and other officers began calling him "Joe Zook."
Save me a place in "Fiddler's Green," Joe.

I live in Canada, and I got curious about my mother's last name, which was Zuccala, and to read about J. Zuccala on 9-11 was very sad. I don't know if we are close relatives, but for sure we're related somehow. I'm sorry.

I started working at Citibank right out of college at 22. I was a nervous kid making my way at the lone skyscraper in Long Island City. My colleagues and I called it the "Green Monster". At some point I was given the responsibility of reporting department stats at a weekly executive meeting. Joe Zuccala ran this meeting.
At my first appearance I could hardly get my words out, and I barely made it through my presentation. And then subsequently took on an onslaught of pointed questions having to justify each calculation.
At the second meeting, I saw Joe outside the conference room. He came over to me and told me to sit next to him when we got inside. I'm 5ft, 8in, so looking up at Joe ... I said, "Okay," my hands sweating, my heart racing....
So when it came time for my presentation, Joe proceeded to introduce me to everyone ... his introduction giving me a mildly clean slate. And in retrospect he was clearly showing everyone that he was supporting me. My presentation still was terrible, but the questions were all the less barbed.
Over time that meeting became a breeze. I actually looked forward to it. I looked forward to seeing Joe. I loved the way he, without effort, was a guy that everyone just loved. He spoke about his family. He made jokes. He made everything lighter. He was awesome.
When 9/11 happened, I was in that same building, the "Green Monster," in some other conference room. I made it back to Brooklyn to find more horror. What an indescribable day.
I was was so sad when I heard that Joe was one of the people lost. I went to St. Patrick's to see his ceremony, just a back row guy, just one person who was touched by Joe. I'm 33 now. It's 7 years later. But I will always remember him on 9/11. Always. I will always say a prayer, and say, "Thanks, Joe."

Joe was always the "big guy" at Societe Generale. Not because of his size, because of his big heart. He coached our basketball team at SocGen and was one of the best coaches I knew. He is truly missed and I know he is with God coaching someone about how to live life.
Love always,
Kevin

I met Joe through my work as an HR person at the time of the Citibank merger with Travelers. Becuase of his warm personality, we easily struck up a collegial friendship. When we spoke he always mentioned his family and how proud he was of his daughters. During one of our last conversations when he left Citibank, he talked about a fabulous trip he took to Australia with his entire family. Although I didn't know him for a long time or that well, I can say he was one of the nicest, kindest people I had ever met. I think of him on each anniversary.

I was watching the memorial on TV.
I saw Joe's picture. I'm sorry for you all.
I came across Joe as a salesman when he worked at Societe Generale. That year my younger brother an Army chopper pilot was killed in El Salvador. Joe gave me a big hug/handshake. It meant a lot.
God Bless you and Joe.

Post your memorial thoughts:
Share your feelings and memories of grief and
sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories. If you knew this
person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with
us something about his/her life:
- what kind of person he/she was,
- what nice points you remember about him/her,
- what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
- what you two perhaps did together,
- what he/she meant to you,
- or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging
for other people.
This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.
Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!
