From our days on the gridiron at the Academy to playing pick up basketball at Whidbey....you will never be forgotten brother.

You didn't know me, but I knew your father many years ago. I am a third cousin. I was very sorry to hear about your death and the way you passed away. It was a trying time for your family and for the whole United States. My prayers are with your family.

After 9/11 many of us who were stationed with the US Navy ceremonial Guard had many duties during the sad time our nation faced. One duty was escorting friends and family of the missing or deceased from the Pentagon. The day before I went home on leave, Sept. 15th, I escorted family and friends of Lt. Jonas Panik around Annapolis Naval Academy where he had graduated. We sat with the Commanding Officer through a service at the chapel and then at lunch. I remember the lunch part very distinctly because I was the only one in uniform and the only one who did not know him. A lot of stories, laughter and memories were shared during that time. I also remember when the phone call came, then there was only silence and tears. Although my career in the Navy was short and I am honored to have been a part of that. Fair winds and following seas Lt. Jonas Panik.

You were my first intelligence officer; on my very first overseas deployment... and a great one at that. It broke my heart when I knew that you had perished... I remember playing basketball in Bahrain many a time... you will always be in my thoughts and I will always carry the memories of you with me. You went way too soon before your time. God bless you Jonas, you were very well loved!

Jonas, it is 9/11/08. Seven years later, and still you are with me as if it were yesterday. I remember the evening when Jennifer called me and said, "Aunt Carole, I have just met the man I am going to marry." And I remember laughing.    "You what?" I asked. And she told me very quietly--again--that she had just met the man she was going to marry. Now, knowing Jennifer, you KNOW that the girl is as animated as they come. And you also know that tone of voice she has when she is dead serious. And she was. And I knew she was telling me a fact, not a hope.

So Jenn brought you home to meet the family. (How you could survive that, and not the Pentagon, is beyond me ... but knowing how much you like Gary Larsen and "The Far Side," I know you will understand the sense of humor there.) But unlike the other guys Jenn dated, you were different. You had a sense of humor, a sense or honor, a sense of self, and a sense of spirit. And you were adorable! Do you know what I loved best about you, Jonas? I loved the way you made Jennifer come alive. To watch you two together made my heart smile, and I only wish you had more time together in this lifetime.

And the discussions we got into! Religion, politics ... you name it. They were great, and you were always informed and never, ever afraid to speak your mind. I liked that!

Well, I think about you a lot, kiddo. And I can't imagine not having had you in my life. Quality over quantity, huh? :-) I love you. I miss you. But I carry you with me. Love, light, and laughter ALWAYS, Jonas!

You will always be in my heart. I was extremely honored to be chosen to engrave a plaque for your memorial. May the Good Lord give you a big hug today and every day.

Jonas, I did not know you but yesterday I met your parents.  Their love for you is so deep and profound that after they left I had to go and cry.  I know that they love and miss you everyday.  They gave me the ultimate example of the love and depth of emotion a parent feels for their child.  I know they are still proud of you and what you accomplished during your life.  I work in the building you were assigned to, and I just wanted to let you know you have not and will not be forgotten.

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.

Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!
