November 13th (your birthday) came and went this year so quickly. It was a sad day for our whole family as we remembered you, Joseph. We miss you very much! There isn't a day that goes by that we don't think of you. We are very proud of you for what you did on that Tuesday morning seven years ago. We know that your mere presence that day meant hope for so many people in need. Thank you for caring so much for others. Love you and miss you!

Joseph, my brother, it will be 6 years on September 11 since you left us to go to heaven with the heroes. On every anniversary, Tim and I listen to the tapes. When we listen to them, your voice, as you climbed up the 78th floor, we feel very close to you. Miss you and love you. God Bless.

I went to Good Shepherd Grammer School and Manhattan College with Joe. I remember him as a great guy, very down to earth and easy to get along with. Also quite the good student. When we graduated from Manhattan he amazed me by telling me he wanted to go into the NYFD. It was something he always wanted to do, and he figured he could fall back on his engineering degree after he retired. God Bless you, Joe. We'll meet on the other side.

We live in Portland, OR. Over 10 kids painted their hearts and souls out because of Joe Leavey. We love and miss him.

We love you Joseph and we miss you very much. We are very proud of you. The street renaming ceremony in Inwood was very special. What a tribute! We could feel your presence there and there was quite a crowd! When we listen to the tape of your voice as you climbed to the 78th floor, we feel very close to you and admire how professional you were and how you represented the FDNY's Bravest under such horrendous conditions. You offered hope to so many suffering souls that day. We love you!

Growing up, Joe and I lived on opposite ends of the PS 98 School Yard in Inwood. We went to Good Shephard School and
Manhattan College together. We both rode the "A" Train to the Wall Street area after graduation. One day on the Train Joe told me he was leaving his high paying, prestegious job as a CM with a major construction firm.
What would you do that for? He then told me was was going to be a Fireman, all I could say was WHY? With a mile wide smile, Joe said it was what he always wanted to do.
It is a tradgedy that Joe's life was cut so short, but I will always remember that day, and know that when Joe's time came he was doing what he liked best- Helping Others as a member of New Yorks Bravest. -John Taguer, Monroe NY

I never met Lt. Leavey, I do however wear a memorial bracelet with his name upon it. I do this as a reminder of the great sacrifice he and all the others made on that day. I have been a firefighter for over 7 years, not only did the world lose a great person that day but we all lost a brother. May God bless all those that were lost.
No greater love hath a man than this,
that he shall lay down his life so
that others may live.

Post your memorial thoughts:
Share your feelings and memories of grief and
sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories. If you knew this
person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with
us something about his/her life:
- what kind of person he/she was,
- what nice points you remember about him/her,
- what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
- what you two perhaps did together,
- what he/she meant to you,
- or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging
for other people.
This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.
Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!
