In July of this year, I visited NY City for the first time with my daughter, my friend Linda and her daughter Morgan. We made a point of wanting to visit the 911 Memorial. I cannot even describe the emotions that I felt and continue to feel. At the end of the visit and going through the gift shop, I purchased a bracelet that has the name of Lt. Kevin Dowdell and immediately put it on my wrist where it remains. There is not a day that goes by that I do not think of what he did for his country and fellow man. I just wish that I had purchased the bracelet before viewing the memorial as I would have been looking especially hard for any pictures of him. My heart goes out to his family and prayers are said for them daily. He may be gone, but he is not forgotten and he continues to touch the lives of others through this bracelet. Thank you.

My condolences to your family, friends, and fellow firefighters on the loss of this brave man. Although I never met you, I thought as one father to another that you would want to know that your service and spirit live on in your son's. It is my honor to have met your son James, and I can only hope that my own son stands as tall when he is called.

I just wanted to express my sympathies to the family and friends who lost Lt. Kevin Dowdell. I recently participated in the Red Rocks 9-11 Memorial Stair climb in Morrison, Colorado. All those who participated in the stair climb wore a name badge in honor of a rescue worker who died on 9-11. I just wanted to express how proud I was to wear Lt. Dowdell's name badge and that I will never forget!

I don't remember meeting Kevin but he was one of my dad's closest friends. There's not a day that goes by that my dad doesn't think or talk about him. He will forever be in our hearts.

I was just reading about the run across the US as a tribute to those who lost their lives and about the helmet signed by Fire Lieutenant Kevin Dowdell that is being carried by the Australian runners.... This led me to read more about Lt Dowdell and his family. That led me to this website. I felt I had to write something to show that people all around the world have not forgotten these fallen heroes.

To those left to cherish the memories of Kevin. Dittle and I met at a small school in Middletown, New York, in 1969. We grew up worlds apart but found so much common ground and became friends. His time there was brief but we were reunited in the Police Academy in 1980. Again, his time there was brief and he moved on to the Fire Department. We again had a chance meeting at the St Patrick's Day Parade I was working the detail and he was walking with his lovely family to the marshalling area. Dittle was lost shortly thereafter. During our last encounter I seen the pride he held for his family and his job for we met in our formative years and then both stood as Lieutenants for different departments. He was a good man, a good dad and I know he would be proud of the lives his sons are now living. He will always remain a cherished classmate from two different eras. For those who knew him I gave you nothing new, for those who did not cherish the relationships you make during your journey called life.

People should respect the fact that we have firefighters that try their hardest to save people's lives.

Hello my name is Nicholas Rossi. My father died saving many lives in the twin tower bombing. He is my hero and I hope one day I can be just as honorable as him.

I watched the 9/11 speech with President Bush speaking about a family, the Dowdells. I got a call from my twin brother Scott who has been doing a family tree on and off of our family. He told me that Kevin Dowdell is a family member of ours. My Grandfather was William P. Dowdell and lived in Queens New York all of his life. He ironically was one of the brokers that was involved in the sale of the twin towers, and I as a little girl was there at the ribbon cutting ceramony with my twin brother Scott. My Grandfather's brothers were for the most part port authority officers and firemen in the city. Is there any way to reach the Dowdell family to let them know there is more family in Arizona? I will keep a watch on this site. My mother is still alive and her mane is Norma M. Dowdell. She has also talked about family in Queens. I'm so sad but so proud of Kevin Dowdell! Please contact me through email emma2534@cox.net

My name is Connor Kevin Dowdell. I am a 12 year old boy who was watching the presidential report on the anniversary of the 9-11 catastrophe. I learned about Lt. Kevin Dowdell's sacrifice which we all thank and feel very proud of. I felt very touched knowing about him, his wife and his children, who are serving our country. I wish I had met him. God bless Lt. Kevin Dowdell and his family.

How wonderful Lt. Dowdell's heroic character was passed to his sons. I was grateful to be made aware of this family's story in President Bush's speech on this the fifth anniversary of 9/11. I am trying to actively practice compassion and avoid rhetoric, so please accept this statement at face value, it is a story I am the better for knowing. Must be quite a Mom and widow.

With respect,
Jennifer Farley

I work for a CPA in Lubbock, Texas, who is also a local Firefighter.  When I went to work for him in July, he was wearing a bracelet, which had the name of a firefighter that lost his life on 9/11/01.  I inquired about the bracelet, and told him that I wanted to wear one to commemorate one of our fallen heroes.  He then pulled out of his desk a box of bracelets (I assume one for each of the firefighters that lost their lives).  I looked through them... and chose the one that reads, "F.D.N.Y. LT KEVIN DOWDELL SEPT. 11, 2001".  One one end of the cuff, it reads, "fallen hero", and on the other end of the cuff, it has the American flag.  I am proud to wear this bracelet EVERY DAY.  People inquire about it often, and I simply tell them we will never forget!  My admiration for the NYFD is beyond words, and I know Kevin lost his life protecting the people of New York!  I hope his family reads this because I want them to know I am one person that will be forever in his debt!

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.

Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!
