Just returned from New York,so very sad to see that my namesake died in 9/11,so very proud to find out that he was such a hero on that dreadful day.
Our love and prayers go out to Steven and his family all the way from Folkestone in England.
God Bless.

Dear Steven,
What can I say you were a great neighbor. when I sit on my stoop I can still see you leaving your house with your headphones on and stretching by the lamp post getting ready for your daily jog. When I walk up the driveway I can still see sammy and norton in your backyard. It has been 10 yrs since you left us and it still feels like yesterday. I remember sitting on the edge of the couch waiting to hear that they found you alive but that never came. I hope you are in a better place and watching down on all of us on the block because we sure miss you down here.

I did not have the pleasure of knowing Lt Bates, but I received a Mercy Band with his name on it within a few months of 9/11/01. I wore it with pride for a number of years but it is made of softer metal and so now I only wear it from 9/11 till 9/19 every year. I would love to know his birthday so I could also wear it then. I feel a very strong bond with Lt. Bates and want his loved ones to know how much their sacrifice has meant to all of this country. Someday I would love to visit New York and go to the memorial and do a rubbing of his name.

Today at school we learned more about 9/11. We were given a project to make a memorial for those brave firefighters and rescue workers who risked their lives to save others. I chose to do Steven Bates. I have never met Steven Bates, but I am happy to be making him a memorial out of paper that will be hung in my school. We are making paper Twin Towers that will go through the halls and will grow bigger each year. Thank you Steve for fighting until the very end of your life to save others on September 11, 2001! You are a true hero! And now on 9/11 I will think of you! Thank you!

dear Matthew Barnes and family,
Today at school we had a service for all the men and women who had died and were overall affected in the 9/11 attacks. The seniors then each gave us a heart that had a name of a person who had died. I recieved your name. I wore this heart all day. I, after reading these comments that people have written about you, I can honestly say that you were a great father husband and friend. I knew what the 9/11 attacks were and there stastics but now I will have a face to the tradegy. God bless you and ypu family. Thank you for being brave in the face of danger, thanking you for serving the country, most of all thank you for inspiring me!

Steve,
I join with your friend, Bobby Eveline, in acknowledging that we think of you, and your compatriots, every day. For a person who accomplished what you did, on your own, everyone must respect you.
For having the guts to "go in" when everyone was running away, everyone should love you.
On this day, heart break of the loss of you comes back even stronger.
Thank you, and all the first responders, military and supporters, for what you do for me (a born and raised New Yorker) and all Americans.
Good bless you, and all who have followed you.

On 9-11-10, I participated in the Colorado 9-11 Stair Climb. We climbed 110 floors of stairs (the same amount as in the World Trade Center) in honor of all the lost lives on 9-11-01. In addition, we chose an individual who lost their life in the 9-11 tragedy and climbed in their honor and remembrance. I climbed for Lt. Steven Bates — for his memory, for his bravery, for his family. I feel honored to have had the opportunity and freedom of climbing for him and his family. God bless Lt. Steven Bates and his family.

Dear Steve,
I miss your smile and the happy way you dropped into my office to pay a bill or just to say hello. I think of you every time I see a fire truck responding or hear the sound of the siren as it passes by. Nine years have passed, but I'll never forget you.

I grew up with Steven Bates in Glendale Queens. He was my friend, and although I haven't been in touch with him in years since I moved, I know he was a leader to his fire company, and he is missed by all who knew him. R.I.P., brother.

Six years have passed, and I still can't believe you're gone. We were friends since the age of 5. The memories I have of all the crazy times we spent together keep me going. You are missed every day, Buddy. Life has never been the same. You will always be my best friend, no matter where you are. We are so proud of you and love you dearly.

As we approach the 4 year anniversary of the attacks, I still feel overcome by grief. I still can't believe that this really happened or that he is really gone. Steve and I lived together for over 7 years prior to the events of Sept. 11th. There is not one day that passes that he does not enter my mind many times throughout the day. If I see something funny I think, "Steve would have loved this". If I eat something wonderful, I think, "I wish Steve could try this." He was a great man and a brave and dedicated firefighter, He was rough and tough, yet gentle and sensitive. His laugh was contagious and his sense of humor one of his best qualities. He was smart and articulate. He was the best friend any person could ever wish for. He is dearly missed by all and will be forever in my and many other peoples' hearts.

Post your memorial thoughts:
Share your feelings and memories of grief and
sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories. If you knew this
person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with
us something about his/her life:
- what kind of person he/she was,
- what nice points you remember about him/her,
- what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
- what you two perhaps did together,
- what he/she meant to you,
- or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging
for other people.
This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.
Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!
