I have not met Mark but my husband David Nelson did just 2 weeks before Sept. 11. From CT, Dave met Mark in NY for a possible consulting job since he (Dave) took a forced retirement and needed one. They had a great lunch and Mark was talking proudly of his boys and looking forward to the family vacation at the Jersey shore. I still keep the calling cards that he gave Dave that day, a piece of a wonderful person who thought of Dave at a time of need. May his boys always be blessed and be proud of their Dad! God bless, Jill, and our thoughts are with you! We will always remember!

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Zangrilli and Derosa families today, as always.

Rest in peace my friend

Dear Mark,

The loved that you had for Jill and the boys was unconditional and everyone who knew you, knew that they were first and foremost in your daily life. However, you did have a heart big enough to share you kindness for all whom came in contact with you.

The Kemper days seems like a life time ago, but memory of your innocent personality and the different facial expressions that you displayed in calm times and in emergencies, ready to jump into action is still fresh in my mind like yesterday.

You were one of the true angles that was taken from us much too soon.

Rest in peace dear heart.

I grew up with Mark since SJG days. I also commuted with him to the city. I remember how happy he was when he finally got back into town... okay, Pompton Plains. He wanted a house on West Parkway, but the people wouldn't budge on the price... so he agreed to Pompton Plains, but his heart was in Pequannock. RIP and I hope his family is doing well.

Some people you never forget. I met Mark in 1989 while he was a trainee at Kemper, and I was showing up to teach my first classes—he told me it was a good career move. We both laughed. Later we worked on some projects together. He was easy to be around, impressive, and smart. People who knew him are the better for it. God bless him and his memory.

Mark and I were in the same grade at PTHS, and although I did not know him personally, I always found Mark to have a kind smile and a gentle demeanor. God bless him, his family, and friends. You will never be forgotten, Mark.

My wife, six month-old daughter and I lived on Watts Street and Canal in the fall of 2001. Every night when I took our dog out for his walk I would stop and look at a few of the many flyers of the missing that covered the neighborhood. As the months went by, the jet fuel fire still burned and the posters remained, but finally, after what seemed like forever, they both went away-- all that is, except for the poster and photo of Mr. Zangrilli. His poster, on the east side of the West Side Highway and Canal Street, remained for many months longer than any others I saw, and I used to make a point of walking by there. Mr. Zangrilli seemed like such a good guy, and the many tributes that are posted here and elsewhere confirm this.

My heart goes out to his wife and children and the rest of his family on this 7th Memorial.

We miss Mark very much. Our family will never be the same. He was a wonderful person and a perfect gentleman. We know he was a hero on 9/11/01. I just talked about Mark as a hero with my students today. He's our angel watching over us. My children have "M" names in his honor.

With love,
Karen, Anthony, Mia Hope, and Michael Anthony

As the Holy Father enters the hallowed place where you died, Mark, we again pray for you, Jill, and the kids. Such a kind and gentle soul, please know that you are loved. The angel that you and Jill gave us one Christmas is still hanging to help us remember. God bless.

I didn't know this individual; however, he is from my hometown, so I feel a connection to him. I stumbled upon his name and bio last year while looking at 9-11 victims and continue to visit sites in his honor from time to time to let him know, if only his spirit, that he is thought of.

Mark Zangrilli was my brother-in-law for a brief time, a million years ago, but I will always remember him as one of the nicest, most likable guys I've ever met. I'll never forget the "special presents" he and Jill left for me and my then-wife on the pillows of our honeymoon suite on our wedding night. I think of Mark often, and always on September 11. The world is a lesser place without him.

Though I didn't have the opportunity to know this man personally, I feel a connection as I too grew up in Pequannock. Being a small town and PTHS being a small HS we are all family. My thoughts and prayers stay with this family and all those affected by the events of 9-11.

God bless the victims and God bless the USA

I grew up on the same street as Mark, he was 2 years younger than me and in my sister's class. I remember childhood times of kickball, football, stickball in the street (even though we all had great backyards in which to play). We will always remember him as a great person and will continue to keep his family in our prayers. His loss will be felt for a long time.

I recently found out about what happened to Mark on 9/11 and was so saddened by this news. Mark was a great guy, I worked with him for a few years at Fortunoff. What I remember about him most was his smile. He was always smiling, always kind, and always had a nice thing to say. My heartfelt sympathies go out to his family and friends.

I knew Mark in High School, particularly Mr. Tilli's Pre-Cal class. We used to get together in my dining room with Dave Lin and Paul Livingstone to work on Mr. Tilli's take home exams. Funny, smart, and just a joy to be around. We didn't keep in touch after high school, but it was painful to hear that he was a victim. We will never understand why his life was so short, but I will never forget what a wonderful person he was.

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site.
