We had a Memorial Service yesterday for the victims of 9/11 here in Piqua Ohio. At the end, we were invited up to take a combination of 2 silk handmade roses off of a giant flag. On the back of the roses was a name of a 9/11victim. I chose Martin DeMeo. Although I did not know him or his family, I want you to know that you are thought of and will be often. If you would like one of the roses, I would be happy to send it to you if you give me an address. God Bless you as you continue to celebrate his life and your memories.

Although I had never met Martin N. DeMeo I share his last name as a fellow Italian American. My ancestors came to America through Ellis Island and the last name was DeMeo. My family eventually migrated from NY to CA. But, when I saw that Martin was one of the Firefighters was a true hero of 9/11 I felt extremely sad for his passing but proud that he was a DeMeo. Please know that I am grateful and proud to say my maiden name was DeMeo and that Martin has contributed to that feeling. My heart goes out to his family.

We will never forget. It was a honor to have had him in our lives even though it was only for such a short time. It felt like years. Forever in out heart....

I don't remember first meeting Marty anymore than I remember meeting my brothers or sister. We lived next door to each other and were friends from my earliest of memories. My Uncle Harry, my mom's youngest brother, was good friends with Marty's dad. Our grandfathers were fiends. We grew up in an Italian neighborhood. Most families were first genertion Americans.
We shared everything. The first loves of our lives were best friends. I remember attending his dad's funeral. We were only in junior high when Nick died. I remember years later Marty at my dad's funeral. I moved out of New York but our friendship continued despite the miles. Sometimes we talked only at Christmas happily sharing news of our children.
We were taught certain values growing up in that working class neighborhood. Responsibility, duty, honor. Those were the things that drove Marty. I remember his feelings when his dad died. He no longer had the same choices as the rest of us did growing up in the crazy late sixties and early seventies. He had a mother and younger brother that were now his responsibility. Duty honor I know those were the things that drove him that morning. That and his love of others. It was an honor to place that Vermont stone in my car and carry it to Port Washington. It now sits a few hundred feet from the enterance to the high school we both attended. The stone's words are lasting tribute to you and your brothers and sisters in uniform who gave their all that morning. I placed it there the moring the Memorial Garden was to be dedicated and lay it there with a piece of my heart. I still think of you often. Until we see each other again. I salute you my friend...May God Bless.  Dennis

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.

Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!

9-11Heroes.us is a personal effort, not a business, nor is the site dedicated to any specific person or persons. We will not post negative comments. Moreover, 9-11Heroes.us reserves the right to choose which comments to post and also to edit the comments for spelling, punctuation, grammar, or edit comments that are unkind or offensive in some manner. We are maintaining this site with our own money and time. We try to keep the advertisements to a minimum and we try to make them as unobtrusive as possible. The revenue goes back to maintaining this site.

Thank you for your understanding in these matters.
