Mary Lou,
We never met. I live in Harrisville WV and work in Parkersburg WV. For a long time, I passed a billboard in Vienna with your Senior picture on it with the reminder to perform a random act of kindness in your memory. I have performed random acts of kindness and have suggested that others do as well in your memory every year. Thank you and may you rest in peace. You are not forgotten.

Mary Lou, this weekend, the 10th commemoration of your death and the deaths of so many other innocents, my church distributed red, white and blue ribbons each tagged with the name of one victim. Each of us could hold in our hand and feel a connection to one unique victim. Your name was on my ribbon, and while I have prayed for all victims collectively over the last 10 years, I now have your picture to help me focus on you specifically. Certainly I will continue to pray for all victims, but Mary Lou, your face I will focus on as I pray. May God keep you and all in the palm of His hand; may He comfort your loved ones with the knowledge that you and they will reunite in glory.

Watching the 9/11 tribute today, on 9/11/11, I thought of Mary Lou. We met at UNC-Chapel Hill, in 1996. She left an indelibale impression on me as an intelligent, beautiful and kind person. I was honored to be her friend. The day I was accepted to medical school, she was there to celebrate it with me. That is a day, I will always remember and she was part of it. Thank you Mary Lou

I did not know Mary Lou personally, but I feel as though I know her, through her sister, Angie Stropkai. (Angie was my boss, when we worked in one of the K-Mart pharmacies). When I first saw a photo of Mary Lou, I thought I was looking at Angie. They could be twins. Despite never having known her,I feel very close to her. The world and her family have lost a beautiful, sweet person. To all of her family, God bless. Angie.....I think of you often, love to you and your family.

Mary Lou was a research analyst for my company. She was smart, energetic, enthusiastic and beautiful. When I last saw her at the KBW conference in NY in July 2001, we spoke about my then 2 year old son...and she mentioned how "lucky" I was and that someday...after her stint in NY (which she loved) and her world travels (which she spoke of often)...she would love to settle down and have a family. I was devastated to learn that this beautiful young woman never got to live her dream...but believe she enjoyed her 26 years immensely. I think of her every time I visit NY and especially each September. This morning my son asked me about 9/11 so he could "share" in school. I told him my memories of Mary Lou and her colleague that I knew and were lost that day. He told me tonite that he shared this in school...it made me feel better that her story and memory lives on. My thoughts are with her family and friends this weekend.

Altough our lives had taken us in different direction, the friendship we shared would never be forgotten. You certainly could light up a room just by walking in. The genuine kindness and compassion you showed for people was truly amazing,if only we all had that characteristic. You certainly were one of a kind.So many regrets, but one day I will see your smile and our friendship will be as it was. Missing you always...But never forgetting you.

Mary Lou was one of the most beautiful girls I had ever seen in the halls of P.H.S.! She always good to me, even when others weren't. Every year around this time, I think of that. Thanks, Lou. :-)

I'm doing a paper for school, and I have to talk about how 9/11 affected me ... and of course I thought of you, Lou. I miss you every day. I don't know why it had to be you, or anyone else, for that matter! I always knew you were an angel, but I know now that you have your wings.

xoxo

I miss you Mary Lou. I still think of you so very often. I just wish that I could hear your voice or see your beautiful smile again; I can only pray that one day I will once again be blessed and have that chance. I will never forget you.

If only...

Your billboard is missing in Parkersburg this year—at least I have not found it. And it was with great sadness that it was not there in remembrance of you and what you stood for. I'm sure it creates heartache for your family, but I do not want to forget you or the others who lost their lives. You were a beautiful, gifted, intelligent, and educated young woman. I pray throughout the year for you, as well as for the other families affected by this terrible event, and I am sorry you lost your life too soon. May God bless you and your family.

Today I am thinking about Mary Lou. We met in English class during our freshman year at Carolina and instantly became friends. She was one of the most beautiful, smartest, kindest, most thoughtful women I have ever met in my life. I am very fortunate to have known her. I am a better person because of Mary Lou. She had so much potential, so much to offer our world. Her loss is a tragedy. My heart goes out to her family today. Mary Lou, I miss you.

Love,

Mary Lou was a person I talked with almost daily in the months before the attacks. She provided financial information for my productivity studies for my company. We became friends and planned to meet for coffee when I was able to get to New York or she made it out to Portland, Maine. Losing her that day was heart wrenching. I will remember her fondly as I do today, eight years later.

Mary Lou Hague was a sweet woman and will be missed by her friends and family and even by people who never really knew her.

I have 2 copies of Portraits, 9/11/01, and the portrait that stood out, if that is possible, is the one of Mary Lou Hague dancing to that song I know as being positive, waving her arms, yelling "Woo-hooo!" So many lives lost, on top of the world and life, too. Their memory will go on if you say their names out loud, in affirmation, so they and we can go on.

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!
