I am saying prayers for Mitzi Sperando. I have a bracelet from the World Trade Center visitor center that bears her name. Reading these beautifu memories is so special. I know I would have liked her.
God bless her and her loved ones and friends.

I worked with Mitzi over 15 years ago. When I heard of her passing in such a horrific way, I was very saddened. I remember Mitzi always making the day a little brighter at work. She was always upbeat and smiling. She always knew how to pick you up when you down or stressed. She was an amazing co-worker and human being. She was taken way too soon.

As I keep seeing new photos of the 9/11 memorial - I cannot stop thinking about Mitzi. I know how close she was to her mom - she talked about her so often when we worked together. I think of all of you often. Mitzi was such a special blessing to those around her.

I did not know Mary, but my heart goes out to her family and friends that loved her and miss her. This weekend 9-11-11, I was working with a group of volunteers in Monson, MA. a community devastated by a tornado on 6-1-11, as part of the national day of service in honor and remembrance of 9-11-11 victims. Monson is planting a tree in remembrance of all those lost. I received a white spruce seedling which I will plant in my yard in Westford, MA. The paper Label on the tree packaging says "Recover, Repair, Rebuild. 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance... REMEMBER Mary Rubina Sperando, 39, New York, NY. I will plant this tree in her memory. I am deeply sorry for your loss, and I will pray for you whenI look at this tree. Karen Heitkamp, Westford, MA

Mitzi —

On this day of justice for you, I remember your smile, your grace, your wit, and your beauty. You added to who I am, and I will cherish that forever.

Every year I come back to these guest books and read what people had to say about Mitzi, just so I could see her in a light I couldn't understand when I last saw her. At the time of the 9/11 attacks, I was 7 years old and didn't understand why she wasn't answering the phone anymore or why we couldn't see her again. As time passed, my awareness grew and my cluelessness decreased. Today, I am writing as a 16-year old who has gone through new milestones in my life, knowing she's seeing it all and hoping I am making her proud. This is to honor the woman who took me trick or treating dressed like Cleopatra, played darts with me, taught me the importance of cheesecake, collected acorns with me, made me 7 layer cakes on my birthday, bought me a godzilla lunchbox and watched it on TV, and treated me like her own daughter. To the best, bravest, and most remarkable role model a girl could ever have. I love and miss you every single day. I hope you're still watching Godzilla. I know I wish I was.

Mitzi was a very close friend of the family. She seemed to be blessed with a charismatic nature, a glowing personality, bravery unlike any other, and the greatest friends and family anyone could ever hope to have. Although I was younger when we lost her and I did not understand the gravity of it all, I miss her sitting me on the couch to watch Godzilla, making layered cakes and pizza on my birthday, treating me and my best friend like her own daughters, and just being there as a best friend to my mom. She has shown me to face life with a new perspective, to find the good in something that seems all bad, and she taught me a kindness, a light, and a sense of bravery I could have never discovered without her. It has been seven years now and I still think of her in the hardest of times wishing she was here with me to help me understand everything she unintentionally taught me and for all those years that I have been missing her... But even though her time with us wasn't as prolonged as any of us would have liked, I'm sure she has found a happiness and a sense of wisdom similar to the ones she instilled in every one of us. Never does a day go by when I am not wearing her ring or thinking about her. I may be merely a kid, but I just hope everyone who knew and even ones who didn't know her are aware of just the kind of person she was: unforgettable, remarkable, heroic, and immortal in our lives.

NOW YOU KNOW THE TRUTH I MISS YOU j

Mitzi and I were walking to lunch one day and a baby smiled at me. She said "If a baby smiles at you, they saw your angel." She just had that way of making someone feel so special. But she was the one who was special.

Mitzi, we miss you. If love could bring you back, you would be here.

HER FRIENDS CALLED HER MITZI. MY WIFE WAS MITZI'S HAIR STYLIST. I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO KNOW MITZI. SHE WOULD COME TO OUR HOUSE TO GET HER HAIR DONE. MITZI WOULD JUST LIGHT UP OUR HOME WITH HER BEAUTY AND PERSONALITY. WE BOTH PRAYED THAT DAY, THAT SHE WOULD PICK UP HER PHONE.WHEN MY WIFE AND I GOT MITZI'S VOICE MAIL, WE KNEW.  WHEN YOU SPOKE TO MITZI, YOU ALWAYS FELT BETTER, SHE WAS THAT KIND OF ANGEL. WE WILL NEVER FORGET HER.IF HER BROTHER WITH THE DOG READS THIS, MITZI ALWAYS SPOKE OF YOU. SHE LOVED ALL OF YOU VERY MUCH.MY NAME IS JOHN, AND MY WIFES NAME IS SANDY.

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.

Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!
