Michael,
You are and always will be a HERO in my eyes. Thank you for the huge sacrifice you made on that horrible day ten years ago. You were much too young to die. I have tremendous respect for Firefighters. They risk their lives every day to save innocent people and you did just that on 9/11, a day I will NEVER forget. My thoughts and prayers are with your family. I know you are terribly missed and my heart hurts for the loss of a great person. RIP Michael Vernon Kiefer!

I found this memorial page today about Michael. Yesterday on the 10th anniversary, my boyfriend Jon joined 342 firemen in Nashville Tn for the 2nd annual 9/11 memorial stair climb. He climbed 110 stories in memory of Michael Kiefer. We are thankful for his dedication and bravery and are praying for him and your family. Jon said he will continue to climb in his honor every year! God Bless

I did not know Michael, but I did know one of his sisters. I worked at the grammar school the Kiefer children attended. From the other teachers at the school I heard such wonderful things about the entire family. I do often think of this wonderful young man and wonder how his family can cope with such a horrific loss of one so young. I lost my sister 4 years ago in an accident. She was 49 and left two children and a husband. I see and feel the pain, but see that it is worse for my parents. It is not natural for a child to leave this world before a parent.

I will never forget Michael or Andrew, a friend of my son, who were lost on that same horrible day. I will continue to ask God to help their families and all of the other people of the world who have had unimaginable loses.

God bless you and keep you, Kiefer family.

I was one day reading about Mr. Kiefer and his story touched my heart beyond words could ever explain. My goal is to be a firefighter and I have recently been accepted into my dream department. Evveryday I think of Mr. Kiefer and how his story and life inspires me to be the best I can be and honor the gift of having the greatest job in the world. He is someone who lived life to the fullest, the right way and I ask him for his prayers everyday. Thank you to his wonderful family and friends who have given us a true Hero and Man that is an example of greatness! A true inspiration to me and my vocation of service! We love you!

Dearest Kiefer Family,

I knew your son as a kind and gentle soul. I find myself thinking of him often with ten years gone by since he passed. He was brave and he was good and when I think of him I feel heartbroken and blessed at the same time. How greatful I am to have known such a wonderful man and how much I wish more people could have had the chance to know him. I knew him from friends in the Freeport Fire Department and I am grateful that he touched my life in the short itme he was here. I think of his love of surfing and I imagine him doing just that up in heaven....

I never met you Mike, I I have met your family. I gave your Mom a flag that I had flown at the National Firefighters Memorial site in Emmitsburg Md where I use to work. You are a hero in my eyes as well as the world, and I am proud to have the same name as you. God bless you.

Mr. and Mrs. Keifer,
I am a life-long friend of your sister Maureen. I was very saddened all those years ago when I heard of the loss of your son, Michael. I just now found this site. Please know, that although I had never met your son, he has and will remain in my prayers. May he rest in peace and may you find comfort in the thought that so many people near and far honor the life and memory of your son.
Sincerely, Mary Baker/ West Hempstead/ Houston, Texas

I knew Michael for a number of years. He was not only brave but, he was loved by everyone. He was not only considered a family member to me but also, one of my best friends. He was one of the bravest people I know.

Rest in Peace Michael :-) we love you! :-)

Michael and I were in the Malverne Junior Fire Department together as kids. He was captain, while I served under him as lieutenant.... From that time I spent with him, I could tell you he wanted nothing more than to be a NYC firefighter, and he achieved that. But neither one of us could have imagined what a hero he would turn out to be.

Mike, I knew you for a year or so, but I think of you often. Even when I was in Vegas in 2003, your picture was sitting in a memorial outside of New York, New York Hotel. It was almost eerie to me that that happened. I didn't learn about your passing until November of '01 after running into an old acquaintance one night. I was deeply saddened by the news. I am proud that I occupied a moment in your life.... Rest in peace.

9-11 is one of those events that will never be forgotten by those watching, especially New Yorkers. I happened to be on Youtube at 5AM listening to Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge when I noticed a sidebar that included a memorial from Michael's dad in which he spoke of his love of Johnny's music. In realizing what the clip was encompassing, I began to cry, and I just wanted to say that I'm sorry for your loss and that I extend my friendship whenever you are in Connecticut. I also dedicate my Brooklyn Bridge songs to Michael.

With All Respect,
Howard Gale

I live in Jupiter, Florida, and today I received a dollar bill as change. I noticed the stamp in red: FDNY FF MICHAEL KIEFER REMEMBER 9-11-01. When I saw the stamp, I immediately looked up Michael on line. What a great guy! I am so sorry for your loss! My hope is that this dollar bill has traveled the country, touching lives and making people remember that tragic day. I also hope people who had this bill in their possession took the time to look up Michael and the rest of the HEROES who made the ultimate sacrifice that day. I feel honored to have come across this bill when I did. I know there are so many people going through so much these days, and the holiday season just intensifies everything. So to come across such a simple reminder really helps put life in perspective. I serve with several men and women who either have family or friends who passed away that day, so, from one public servant to another, thank you for your service.

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site.
