The Falling Man—that was a photo (and I film I had seen on youtube). I could not get out of my mind.
Along with the horror of that day, there seemed to be some sort of glory, stillness, peace—when I looked at the photo, I saw a man who had made a decision and who didn't seem frightened or terrified but full of trust in god and his eternal life afterward. That made me shiver and smile at the same moment: What a brave man you were, Norberto! So these words to you and your family:
I honestly feel connected with you and must say that I have seen an angel: It was you, Norberto! God bless you, and love to you and your family from the bottom of my heart.

Dear Norberto:
First of all, I can't help but be reminded of Hagrit's dragon Norbert, from Harry Potter. A random thought, yes, I know, but still I thought it. I also wonder ... did he commit suicide? Surely not. But who am I to know such things? I live a fairy tale life where these things can never happen to me. Who can imagine having to decide to jump out of a window or burn to death? I certainly can't. God surely can. I pray to God to have mercy on your soul Norberto, and in my limited plain old stupid mind, I think that he does. I am so sorry that I can't express it without typing stuff that barely scratches the surface and might offend. I'm sorry for that, too. It is too much for any one person to deal with, and I'm not even a relative. I can only express that I feel a lot towards you. I'm sorry this happened to you. I wish you were able to continue to be in the lives of your family. It hurts me, too, and I am so sorry. So sorry.

Dear Hernandez family,
To say ”time heals all wounds” is a lie. You would have to be inhuman not to mourn your beloved Norberto forever. I have just watched ”The Falling Man.” I am happy for you that he turned out not to be Norberto. But in a way, I’m also sad. I’m not religious, but if ever something has made me think about choosing a religion, it’s the picture of ”the falling man.” I was a guide in Greece on 9/11. The whole disaster was turned into a bizarre show, where every bar and disco along the beach displayed large screens with the horrific images in order to attract customers.
It became an unreal event that way. Logically, I understood the significance of the terror attack, but I never really understood the magnitude of it until I saw the picture of ”The falling man.” It would have been so religiously extraordinary had it been Norberto. A Christian person who had come to such terms with his God that he was given the choice of how to die: choking inside the tower in smoke and flames, or one last lingering breath of fresh air, sending all his love and thoughts to his beloved family while coming to terms with his own imminent death? The choice is beyond the imagination of all of us alive.
I wish you all the best in the future, and I sincerely hope you will accept my deepest condolences. Norberto Hernandez as well as all the other casualties of 9/11 have become a symbol to me of how the world certainly has room for improvement.
I hope you will find a way to move forward. God be with you all.

I know there was controversy around showing this photo at the time, but I am glad they did. No disrespect to the family, but their relative showed exactly what a truly terrible and terrifying situation he was in. We hear of the fight or flight situation, and in this there was no fight. I think that to jump was truly heroic and must have given him some sense of control. It will keep the memory of 9/11 in memories for a long time—as it should, as a reminder of the aftermath of terrorist acts. God bless all his family for their suffering. I hope you have found some peace.

Norberto Hernandez faced death there was no way out he was sentenced but he had the choice of which how he was going to die he could've stayed in the building and burn his way to death or jump in some hope of escaping this madness -
He was a brave big hearted man and he will always remain in our memories and hearts forever, R.I.P.

Norberto did not jump to end his life, but to save it. I have tried to put myself in his position and what I would be thinking would be, "I have no chance if I stay. I have some chance if I jump," keeping in mind that people have survived freefalls from 12,000 feet from airplanes. Norberto gave his last effort to come home to his family. Your father's soul soared like an angel, as he knew his time had come, and he died with the images of his angels in his mind. He is the greatest symbol of the 9/11 tragedy. Instead of pain and terror, he is at peace.
Beanachtai Dia ar an bhfearr seo a chlann agus ar na daoine ar fad a chail a shaol I lar an ufais.
That's Irish for "God bless all the heroes of that day."

I am not from America; I'm from India. I cannot even begin to imagine the tragedy Norberto must have faced to finally make that choice to plunge down from the World Trade Center. He has certainly opened my eyes to the truth of the terrifying reality of 9/11. But I can say one thing for sure: Noberto is a hero, a brave, brave man. He has exhibited a dignity even in death and MADE A DIFFERENCE to this world! And he and the other victims will ALWAYS be remembered throughout the world. And may they rest in peace!
And to the families and friends of the victims of this tragedy, I cannot even begin to imagine the pain you must have felt and still would be feeling with the loss of your loved ones. My love, my thoughts, and my prayers are with you at this point of time! May god bless you all!

My impression: If this was Mr. Hernandez, he wanted his family to know that his pain was quick, and he didn't want his family to live wondering and waiting on some type of news or no news of where he was. He was hoping that they could be with him when he went home to the Lord. He wanted their pain and suffering to be short like his. God rest his soul, and pray for his family now and forever!

To my understanding, and I hope it doesn't offend you in any way, you don't have to see a person to tell them you love them. You just have to give them your heart and they'll give their heart. Life's too short. Make it last while you can. God bless you all.

I remember that day like it was yesterday, and I always will. I remember seeing that picture in the newspaper and imagining what those families who lost someone were going through. I couldn't even come close to imagining the amount of pain that they must feel. It wasn't until about 2 years ago that I saw that picture again. I was in one of my classes, and our teacher asked us to find an article and picture that brought back a memory and that we would always remember. I came across the picture of Norberto, and instantly I knew that this was the correct one to use for my assignment. That picture will be in my mind for as long as I live. I've visited ground zero twice, and I will continue to do so, so I can pay my respects. It's the least I can do. My deepest and most sincere prayers go out to the families who lost someone on that day, and especially to the Hernandez family. Norberto was a hero and will never be forgotten. I bet he was an amazing man, and I know his memory will live on forever. R.I.P., Norberto and all those who perished on that day.

Dear Hernandez family,
My heart goes out to you. May God still guide you through this time. We have now found out it was not your loved one as the jumping man, but as being how religious as I am and your family is as well, we could find it in our hearts and so would God realize that he no other choice. We were not there to experience the horrific things he might have went through. Suicide is not an an option or an answer, but I believe if you have no other solution your loved one should have never been looked down upon. What disturbs me the most is in a matter of desperation people chose to jump, knowing their faith of that leap. That hurts me spiritually more than anything. It wasn't suicide; it was DESPERATION.

Gott segne Euch. Ich bete für euch alle.

i am here in eastern ky. since 9.11 I have had horrid thoughts go thru my heart, it was a tragic day this day of 9.11, my family and friends have had several of our sons and daughters (including my son) join the military in there words TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE, I only wish for this family to know that my heart aches for all of the families of 9.11 so for this man to be called a jumper is not fair. but if one looks closely at some of the pics of the people in the towers windows who is to make the call that he did not stumble or loose footing while standing there in the window trying to get a small token of fresh air. how do we not know that he was not pushed accidently by the person behind him trying to get a small breath of air. so before we decide he is a jumper let us allow our god to decide what he was, AS FOR MOST OF HERE IN EASTERN KY MR. HERNANDEZ HE IS A HERO IN OUR MINDS. so I will leave this to all who want to take the time to read thank you and please in your prayers remember those as often as u can and also pray for our military thank you all

I just finished watching a documentary in class on the story of the falling man.... I could not believe how touching this story really was.... At first I wasn't sure who the falling man was, then when I heard the family's story, I realised it was not Norberto.... When I heard the family's cry to clear their father's name of the falling man, I knew that it was not him.... I don't believe that we should want to know who this man is.... Let it live on in peace. It is painful enough to know that a loved one was hurt in such a painful way, let alone knowing how they died.... Let it be.... My respects to the Hernandez family.

Whoever this person may be, he is the strongest and bravest I have ever seen. Their was once a great saying in history, which was: "the noble die by their own hands" and also "the brave man takes his own life, before death (the enemy) takes it from him". I believe them both. This man did not run from death but faced it and conquered it, forever remaining in our history books as "the Falling Man". Peace with his soul and rest, along with those who loved and knew him. A noble strong man who chose to die by his own hand than that of murderers. A true person, who will be rewarded for his brave acts, BY LIVING FOREVER IN WHAT HE HAS DONE. He has gained eternal life. May his name be forever known as strong and brave. Remember it is not the person who is remembered after they are gone, but the things they did to be remembered. Brave, very brave, man.

If I were to make a guess about what that man was thinking? "I don't want my family imagining a horrible death for me. I want them to see me relaxed and ready to meet my savior." He looks very dignified to me. I would be proud.

I watched "The Falling Man" programme last night. Had it of been your husband/father, then there was no shame in being the man that fell or jumped. It took a brave man to do that. However, I am glad for you that it was not him, and I thought right from the start of the programme that it was clear from the sequence of photos that it wasn't him.

After watching "The Falling Man," I agree he was not Norberto Hernandez, and I am happy for your family. However, there was no shame in what the Falling Man did; he took his life and fate into his own hands, and instead of burning to death and becoming dust, he chose to free himself of pain and flew into the hands of God, returning to the powers that created him. It was not suicide; it was murder. No, "that ... is (was) not my (your) father", but he was just as brave--or even perhaps more so--than Norberto Hernandez was, and he is in heaven and will always be remembered as fearless, brave, graceful, and now at peace, along with all the other "jumpers" and victims of 9-11. Never condemn others for actions you obviously could never understand nor even contemplate--shame on you. May we never be faced with such terror again, and may we never forget. God bless us all.

Hi, I'm Kristof and I live in Kortrijk, Belgium. With now on the fifth anniversary of the attacks a lot of documentaries are being shown on tv and one of the documentaries is the story of Norberto Hernandez, a chef patissier in the windows of the world restaurant in the World Trade Center. His tale went around the world as the falling man or the jumper, although the picture that went around the world as the symbol of the jumping people wasn't him. This documentary really took me, hit me emotionally. That's the reason why I post this message. I want to express my deepest condelences to the family Hernandez, I know I'm 5 years too late but still I find it necessary to express my feelings.
I also want to express my condolences to all the other families of victims of 9/11 and the victims of the wars that were a certain stage in the war against terror that begun with the attacks on 9/11.
Hopefully such horror will never occur again!

Hernandez was a victim of human insane. Some peoples try to solve their problems killing inocent peoples in the name of religion. No religion really don't promote the killing of a person with other religion. This is only when the humans try to use one religion to reach their goals. Is not fair to kill innocent peoples. Hernandes paid the tribute for this fundamentalistic interests. At the same time paid also his childrens and wife. God bless his family.

just watched the falling man, i cannot begin to understand the pain you have been through, and it doesn't help that the media made it all 100 times worse for you, falsing accusing him, i hope that everybody learns to realise that Norberto was not this man, but a beautiful human being who loved his family so much. rest in peace, god bless all of you!

I'm in UK, I just wanted to say to our best friends in the almighty USA that you all have my deepest sympathies. We too have suffered the tragedies of terrorism, but no where near to the scale of 9/11.
I too, saw 'the falling man' and felt so compelled to write this as i really wouldn't want my family to be the focus of the media, such as this tragic event.
I really don't know what else to say, other than, even though its nearly 5 years after that tragic day, you are all still in my thoughts and my prayers.
God bless you all
A friend, in the United Kingdom

Rest in peace... But do not forget the others that "fell" or "jumped." May they also rest in peace, after a truely horrific decision.

After seeing the program on English television "The Falling Man", my heart went out to the memory of Norberto, a very brave man, and his family. Also my thoughts and prayers go to the victims of 9-11 and their families and I think they are all true hero's.
My prayers are with you... Neil..

to the family of norberto hernandez. after watching a documentary called 'the fallng man', i feel compelled to post a short but sincere message to you all. i think it is disgusting that the media has broadcasted something as sensitive as this, especially as it is clearly not norberto hernandez, i can only imagine the distress the journalist and photographers have caused you all. if i can say though that your dignity, respect and love for norberto hernandez was visible for all to see, i hope i never have to have as much courage as you have shown, may god be with you all. rich carnegie, scotland, uk

I hope that time brings to peace to your family, although I did not loose anyone close to me on that terrible day in 2001, It breaks my heart that their are people who did.
I have just read an article about Norberto, and to think that such a normal, everyday family man ....Just like me can get caught up in such an act of pure hatred makes me fear for the future of the world.
May time and love heal the wounds inflicted by evil.
Best wishes and kindest regards.

I didnt know this man. I cannot imagine what he experienced. I cannot think at how his family must have felt at their loss. What I do know is that he and countless others have left a legacy for future generations. A legacy of hope that this world will be free of terrorism, of fear for one's safety. For freedom. To lose one's life is horrendous, but to know that the loss of life on that fateful day will influence future peace for all mankind. I thank you for that Norberto and all that lost their lives that terrible day

My Father Norberto Hernandez was the sweetest man that had ever lived in my eyes. I believe that his death was more than unjust. My father was to live for many and many years. I understand that God called his son and children to salvation and that's the only thing that keeps me going on a day to day basis. I will never forget the great times and my father's huge heart and those that knew him wouldn't either. My Father's memory shall live on forever not only in my heart but of all who truly knew this humble, loving, caring; man, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and FRIEND!!!!!!!
