Peter Ortale had the room next to mine at Duke in 1984.
I remember meeting him after he had just run from the campus to the airport, a distance of about 20 miles.
He was usually rev-ved up, like he was burning energy at a speed twice as fast as everybody else.
He was handsome, athletic, smart and tough.
His utter annihilation in a moment in time was the vivid impact that 9/11 had on my life.
I began to feel profoundly fortunate in spite of what I did not inherit, achieve or possess.

Mary, I thought of you and your family today as the President spoke. I hope this brings you some peace and rest. I have thought of you and your family so many times since we left Philadelphia. Peace to you and all of your family.

Hi cousin,

As school starts for another year, I keep thinking it will get easier as time goes on, but it only gets harder. You're always in my prayers and thoughts. I miss you, Peter.

Peter...

The Duke Lacrosse Team finally won the big one. You played a huge role in getting the Lax Program moving in the right direction. It was an honor and a pleasure to play with you for 4 years. I enjoyed our time on and off the field.

God Bless Peter! As I understand, he was trying to help others evacuate the building before it collapsed. I am certain that he is up There supervising now! I am very sorry for your loss, and I will never forget!

I knew Pete at Duke, where we were in the same graduating class. A super intelligent, super cool, high-energy, and good-looking guy, he made an impression, and I think of him often. He lives on through those who knew him.

Pete was behind me at PC and I never met him. I think of him often and hope my son grows up with the drive and integrity that Peter had. He is an icon not for 911 but as an inspiration for a life well led.

When I was growing up I always thought Peter was the greatest guy I ever knew. I can still hear him calling my name in the back yard. I always looked up to him and always will.... Pete, you are my hero, and you always will be!

As a former peer at Duke,I remember that Peter always had a smile whenever we'd see each other. As athletes we all were part of a unique fraternity. Although we played different sports we had the same goal and initiatives... to win. I often think about how the family is doing and wish them well. He will never be forgotten.

I knew of Peter when I attended The Episcopal Academy and got to know him at Duke. I remember seeing him at the Card gym weight room where he was a fixture. I respected his hard work, commitment and leadership. We should always remember him.

peter was a great brother, friend, son. someone you liked to be around. had an opinion about everything. he liked to be competitive in all aspects of his life. he loved to travel, read, cook. he had such a giving spirit--always looking out for everybody. our family truly misses him and his love for life. we have a hole that hasn't been filled in the five years since 9/11.

I don't know if Pete would have remembered me, but I remember him...as a tremendous athlete and a great guy. Pete represented the excellence our school stood for. He will forever be missed.

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.

Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!

9-11Heroes.us is a personal effort, not a business, nor is the site dedicated to any specific person or persons. We will not post negative comments. Moreover, 9-11Heroes.us reserves the right to choose which comments to post and also to edit the comments for spelling, punctuation, grammar, or edit comments that are unkind or offensive in some manner. We are maintaining this site with our own money and time. We try to keep the advertisements to a minimum and we try to make them as unobtrusive as possible. The revenue goes back to maintaining this site.
