My family visited the memorial this weekend ( 04-15-12) for the first time since the attack. My wife and I have visited the city many times as my brother inlaw lives there. This is the first time we had brought the children to NYC My son, Alex was 2 when the attack happened my daughter Julia was born in 2002. I did not or could not go back to see the towers, we spent two long hours trying to contact my brother in law who worked at the center and was standing outside going to work when the first plane hit. We finally contacted him when he was on his way walking home. My son walked over to the memorial and up to a name it was Mr. Fitzsimons he placed a small cross my mother had gotten at the Vatican and put it on his name. He said to me he wanted to always remember who this man was and that he would pray for him. I would like to give the Fitzsimons family my deepest sympathy for your loss and know many are thinking of you and Richard.

I knew Richard from piano at Molloy. He was a lovely man and spoke to me a lot about Ireland. I think of Him every sept 11. This year even more as I just lost my own Father. God bless the Fitzsimmons family ten years later.

Uncle Rich,

Hey. It's your nephew, Matt, Jack's grandson. We only met a couple of times, and I don't remember them that well, but I wish I did. Even though we didn't meet much, I still think about you on September 11 and on other days. On 9/11 every year I shed tears for you, and I think what you did is great, saving all those lives. You're truly a hero to all of us.... I wish you were still here with us, and it won't be the same without you.

Love,
Matt

Richie Fitz,

I am thinking of you often these days as a core group of your Power 1961 classmates plan our 50th Power reunion in June 2011. We started one year ago and used your and John Minton's list of classmates that you guys compiled in 1988 as a starting point. As of today, we have "found" 192 classmates out of 261. You will be in our thoughts and hearts forever. God bless my Power brother.

There was a brightness that he brought to this world that seems to be missing now that he has left us. I am richer for having known him. I am poorer for the time stolen — long talks that will never happen, and bad jokes not told. I am wiser for learning that people will not always be around as suites our timetable, and that some people can be terrible and cruel in their purpose; while others, like Richie, can be selfless and giving. But I am not happy for this wisdom gained. I used to dream of being a hero complete with cape and cowl, but to wish to be a hero I've learned you are wishing for something to go wrong. That price is too high. My loss is painful, but my loss is small compared to that of others; and for them I pray even if I don't know what to say.

Hey, Rich,

I just wanted to tell you that I am at the Elks of Brewster, NY. They are having a tribute to all you guys and girls--well deserved--and the rest of the soldiers who are fighting for the USA and sacrificing their lives. The people of the USA have not forgotten what you did. I miss you terribly. You have three grandkids now: Ty, Genna, and Liam. They are a chip off the old block. Love ya!

Richie,

I love you very much, and I miss you tremendously. I feel nothing but proud admiration and devotion for your valor to god and country. The kids are fine. You have three grandchildren now: Ty, Liam, and Genna—she is a beauty. The boys are really active guys. Pat and Sean and Colleen are well. I have not heard from the bros lately—so what else is new? I hope that you ran into mom, dad, and Stephen.

Well, here it is 9-10, and tomorrow will be filled with tears and love for all of you that sacrificed for us—including the ones still falling to the evil of foreign aggression. I wish that the boys and girls would be able to come home soon. It’s time for the USA to start taking care of their own—god help the new president, whoever he or she may be. The next four years are going to be tough. Get all the guys and gals together up there, and tell Michael the archangel that it’s time for him to come again.

Love now and forever,
Brother Jackie

Uncle Rich,

I remember, when I was little, coming to watch my dad play for the Vikings hockey team, and you were the coach. I used to come over all the time and play you in finger hockey on the rug in that front room for hours. You were an amazing uncle and a brave unselfish hero. I think about you all the time, and it's just not the same without you.

Richie,

Thinking of you and our times at Power in the class of '61. Thanks to you and John Minton, I had a fantastic time at the first class of 1961 reunion. Peace, brother.

I have fond memories of playing CYO basketball against Ritchie Fitz. You were a good friend, and I miss you. We are all grateful for your efforts in the First Power reunion. Thanks to your efforts, we have a very large alumni association.

Saddened to learn that on 9-11, you were one of the victims who passed away in the W.T.C. attack. Other than you being another one of the sixty kids in our French Class at Power Memorial Academy, and we both graduated in 1961, I simply don't recall any particular situation to comment on. You and your family will remain in my prayers. God bless you. God bless America!

"Richie Fitz" in the 1961 year book from Power Memorial Academy

"Richie Fitz",
You are mentioned in an article I wrote for the September 2006 issue of WestView, a new Greenwich Village newspaper. We were both in the French Club at Power Memorial Academy. While I'm conversational in French now, I never did get to talk with Brigitte Bardot! Maybe you are speaking French in heaven? God rest your soul, buddy.

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.

Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!

9-11Heroes.us is a personal effort, not a business, nor is the site dedicated to any specific person or persons. We will not post negative comments. Moreover, 9-11Heroes.us reserves the right to choose which comments to post and also to edit the comments for spelling, punctuation, grammar, or edit comments that are unkind or offensive in some manner.
