My name is Michael Cos-Y-Leon and I am a firefighter with Brighton Fire Department in Brighton, Colorado. Yesterday, on the 10 year anniversary of the attacks I was fortunate enough to participate in the Memorial Stair Climb with 342 other firefighters in Denver, Co. The firefighter I chose to climb for was Ruben D. Correa of Engine 74. It was such an honor to be able to do the climb in his name, and I will never forget what he, along with the other FDNY members did for our country that day. 343 Never Forget!

I never met Ruben. Today is September 11,2011, ten years after the towers fell. VH1 is showing a replay of the Concert for New York and in the crowd, someone was holding up a picture with the name Ruben David Correa. I decided to google the name and I found this page. Just wanted to let you know today that someone completely random has never forgotten the sacrifice Ruben made that day. God bless you. Neel Jadeja, Charlotte NC

Ruben is my best friend's father, and although I never got the chance to meet him because I've only known his daughter a little over a year, I know he was a great man who was loved deeply by his family. The pain his family is in will never go away... but I will always be there for their family whenever they need me. Rest In Peace Ruben. We love you.

I never had the chance to meet Ruben but, today (9-11-10) I was honored to carry his picture around my neck. My name is Dustin Cunningham. I am a member of the Nashville Fire Department. Today 343 firefighters took on a chance to honor each of our fallen heroes. Mine was Ruben. We all took part in the Nashville stair climb. Each wearing full turnout gear with tools, tanks and all walking up 110 stories (the hight of the trade centers) to honor these men. Every time I thought I could go no further, I just took a look at Ruben's picture. His picture now hangs in my locker, just as a reminder.

God Bless
Dustin Cunningham

Thinking of you, today, Ruben. I only wish I could have learned about you while you were alive. You are not forgotten.

After the initial shock and terror I experienced learning of the events on 9-11, I began to grieve for the people and the families of those trapped inside the WTC towers. Then I learned that while people were jumping out of the towers and some running away to safety, NYC fire + police departments were running toward the disaster and up the stairs of the towers to save people.

Ruben Correa was a firefighter whose station was right around the corner from where I lived. I can't imagine the pain his family felt, when I, as a stranger, felt so much grief over the desperate situation all the "civilians" and emergency personnel were thrust into. Is the death of a loved one ever actually worth the sacrifice?  Mr. Correa and his colleagues' courage held our city together and strengthened and restored our faith in humanity.

Shortly after the event, I went out and bought two bags of groceries for the fire station, only to find that they weren't needed. Too many other New Yorkers had the same idea. Flowers were piled high in front of the station. We were overflowing with love and gratitude. We couldn't do enough. And down at Ground Zero, they had to turn volunteers away. I will never forget the love, community, and sacrifice shown on that day and the days after 9-11.

To the family of Mr. Correa: I am so sorry for your loss.

I remember Ruben from his other job as security at Congregation Rodeph Sholom. He had a beautiful smile. I remember being a little annoyed at him because he was very strict about letting visitors come upstairs. But he was doing his job and doing it with dedication just like he did on 9/11. I attended his memorial service and still have,  preserved in my freezer, the rose that I was given. I take it out once in a while, gently re-wrap it in foil, and think about him.

I'm helping commemorate the 911 victims this September and Ruben Correa is the name I received to 'remember'.  I have begun to pray for his family daily and my hope is that the memories from this tragedy are a catalyst to something greater ... something of peace and love, not hate and war!

Hi, My name is Sandie Carney and I live in Cleveland, Ohio. I bought 2 memorial bracelets after 9/11 and one of them had the name of Ruben D. Correa Engine 74 on it. I have worn it every day since. I really know very little about Mr. Correa except that he was married and had I think 3 daughters. (information I got from different memorial websites) I just wanted his family to know that I say a prayer for them every morning when I wake up and I think of them every time I look at my wrist. Since the bracelet is made of stainless steel needless to say it tends to set off metal detectors at all public building and airports I go through but I just show them the bracelet and for that moment your husband and father's name is on someone's mind and lips. And with that he can never be forgotten. I wish I knew more about him but it's hard to find anything here in Cleveland. I just wanted you to know that you are prayed for daily and I know God is holding you all a little tighter and closer until you can all be together again. And through the love of Jesus Christ and the promise of eternal lifer through him you will be a family together in Heaven forever.
Bless you all.
Sandie Carney

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.

Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!
