I never knew Stephen nor did I loose anyone I knew on Sept 11Th. He was 33 when he was murdered which is how old I am. I saw his mom, his family speaking of him on TV and my heart is breaking. The pain on his mothers face will stay with me for life. I always go to a Sept 11Th mass every year and Stephen, his family is always on my mind. Your family reminds me of my brothers and sister and I can not imagine your pain. Stephen seemed like a loving, smart, caring person and I am so sorry he was killed.

Always remembered and affected for life.

My name is Anthony O. Whittaker, I met Steve through a mutual friend named John Tully.  John and I coached basketball back in the mid 80s sometimes together and sometimes against one another.  One day John told me about Steven, John said this young man could really play.  The first day I met Steve, we hit it off as a coach and a player.  Steven really knew the game of basketball and could run a team with his eye closed!  Steve had exceptional ball handling skills but even better people skills!  Steven played for me for about 2-3 years and all of our times together was joyous and filled with nothing but winning basketball and fun times.  As years passed I intermittingly stayed in touch with Steve or he would call me to see how I was doing.  I actually was only 2 blocks away from the twin towers on that faithful day but my company made us stay inside until the last tower fell.  Had I known Steve was in one of those buildings I would have done my best to get to him, to lead him to safety as he had done for my teams so many times in the past.  Steven, you will always be in my heart!  Much Love!  Coach Whittaker.

Dear Anne - We think and speak of you so often! We wanted you and your family to know that we are remembering you (and Stephen - even though we only knew him through you) on this tenth anniversary of his reunion with his Maker. Your strength and courage have helped us deal with our own losses and hard times. You left your peaceful mark on our hearts forever. We are grateful to have had some time with you.

Steve, I too worked in lower Manhattan on that day and I never will forget.  On every 911 anniversary I think of the events of that day and I think of you - and when I do - I think of the rivalry that we had on the court and the laughs that we shared off.

You will never be forgotten my friend.

Not a day goes by that I think of all the fun we had at the jcc playing basketball laughing and growing up as kids.
The summers down at woodlawn the hoop is what we shared as kids. Watching you play for Maginn and Suny Albany.
You will be remembered as I always do everday my friend.
God bless you miss you Stephen

Thinking of you today, of course. We watched the documentary last night that your family did and hearing your voice after so much time really brought back so many memories. You are still so missed by so many.

Hello. Each time the clock strikes 9:11, I remember. I pray for those left behind with grief. I pray that the memory lasts forever. I just pray right there in that moment.
I teach my children to do the same.
Today, I talked to my Dad. He told me about the image in The Times Union, Albany, NY. He told me it was of Stephen and his mother Anne. I then looked into the net to see again, to remember the loss that so many endure. I had not seen Stephen's face in some time and remember that same framed picture in the church. I gasped. Right here, in this moment and in many moments to come, I will always remember and share many accounts of Stephen and 9:11.
I thank God I have these memories. Yes, we will never forget. Stiles

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.

Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!
