Here it is 2008, and I'm still looking for Dad's presence. Well, I've found it here, too! Thank you, all. This year we're bringing back Dad's Hero Firefighter tee-shirts that he designed back in the '80s. Part of the proceeds will go to a firefighters' organization that he would approve of, we just haven't picked one yet. We'll be in touch. God Bless!

Vernon came into our lives on Aug. 11, 2000, when he sang his last song for our daughter, Crystal Ann Perez. He was a very special man. He gave our daughter the best song in the world, and till this day we still listen to his CD and cry every time we hear it. We miss Vernon Cherry! You will always be our hero! Crystal is now 14 and going strong! ~!Love you Vernon!~!oxoxoxoxox

Vernon P. Cherry was my younger brother. I miss him greatly. He died doing what he loved, helping other people.
Last time I saw him, he was leaving my mother's house on her birthday, Sept. 4th 2001, with his wife Joanne. Vernon, take care of Mom till we meet again in Gods' house.

Well, Vernon another year has gone by. A lot has happened to the Cherry family this year. New additions to the family by way of births and marriages.

We all had a chuckle at your nephew's wedding near Emmettsburg, Maryland (The National Fallen Fighters Memorial is located in Emmettsburg). During the wedding ceremony, which was held outside in a beautiful garden, the local volunteer firefighter's siren went off calling volunteer firefighters to duty. It held up the wedding ceremony for about 2 or 3 minutes when one of your nephews said, "That sounds like uncle Vernon is letting the family know he is here." The entire family misses you, especially at family gatherings, knowing that you would always share that beautiful voice with the family by singing something appropriate to the occasion.

I am proud to be called your brother. We all miss you very much, and our prayers are with you and Mom (Mama Fannie).

I wore my "Official FDNY Singer-Vernon P. Cherry" shirt today in your honor. Several strangers have approached me and told me they have fond memories of you. I am proud to be your nephew. April, Olivia, Jason and I all love and miss you. Say hi to Momma Fannie for us.

Hello there, Mr. Paul Vernon Cherry, the brave courageous man with the melodic golden voice. We miss your visual presence here on earth, but your spirit is widely felt all around your family, relatives, friends and acquaintances. Your radiance is one of a kind and continually shines. It will always be recognized by all who know of you and also by all whom you are, presently, watching over now. Paul Vernon Cherry, you are an incredible "SPIRITUAL SOUL" the LORD has called upon and has cradled in his arms of protection to provide an "ANGELIC" watch over us all. Thank You. We love you.

Vernon Cherry was my uncle. I was very little when he died, and when I got older, I was very sad. And I really wish he was here because he made everybody smile, and he made that little girl smile, and he was such a good man, and I know that he is still in my heart. And my cousin, Anya Johnson, loved my uncle so much she was heartbroken when he died. And everybody in my family was heartbroken.

Thinking back to Sept. 11, and only just a week before I was connecting with several other Alumni’s for what would have been our first reunion since graduating class of ‘69. As word got around that two of our classmates had perished, all plans for the reunion suddenly halted.

Then came the name recognitions ... Dennis Mojica, Vernon Cherry. I listed their names here plainly for that’s how I knew them for four years of forming bonds, friendships, team work and having fun as we pursued our goals in aviation.
With all respect to Vernon Cherry, Firefighter of Ladder Co. 118 and to his family and fellow Heroes, I am blessed to have had him as a friend for four years. Vernon was a soulful brother, whose smile would let you know he cared about you and he wasn’t afraid to show it. I could only respond in kind. The late sixties were turbulent times for many of us and what we had as classmates, made our growing and going about life much better. Because of friends like Vernon and Dennis, I am reminded of that movie about “paying it back”: That what we do in life is to pay back all the good we get in life, it couldn’t have gotten any better without them.

Will miss you at the reunion...if it ever gets on.

I did not know Mr. Paul Vernon Cherry, personally, but I recall watching the New York Channel Five News at 10:00p.m., and they were covering an entertaining and positive story on a New York Fireman, who loves to perform and sing songs. I must admit I was quite taken by his lovely voice and positive lyrics. Ever Since that time, Mr. Paul Vernon Cherry has left an indelible impression on my mind, I often think about him and will always think of him as the "AWESOME SINGING NEW YORK FIREMAN WITH A BEAUTIFUL VOICE". May God Bless his family, friends, and relatives. Mr.Cherry was one of a kind, he exuded such a presence here on earth, but will now exude an even bigger presence on earth and the stars above, as one of God's Spiritual Souls. You are greatly missed by all. Please continue your watch over us. Thankyou.

I was cruising the web one morning and came across this site. I was surprised how much my brother was loved by so many. I appreciate all your comments. 911 was a wakeup call for me, as well as everyone else in the US. Last time I talked to Vernon was Aug 01 at a family get together. He encouraged me that I would get better, as I was dealing with cancer. Its been over 5 yrs since Ive been cancer free. Pray for me that I can "maintain the miracle". God as healed me as well as that little Perez girl, who had leukemia. In Aug 01, Vernon sang a song for her with a bunch of other firemen at a recording studio in NY. NBC Dateline aired a story about Vernon and Crystal Perez. After 911 Dateline reported that she was also healed. Vernon was one of 4 younger brothers and my youngest sister, whom I favored over the rest because of his talent and energetic spirit. I cant leave without expressing my faith in God that I know my brother is not in heaven yet, but if Im faithful, and you too, will see my brother (and many others) again when Jesus returns in the clouds of heaven gather His own people, who were faithful to God and gave their lives for others.

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.

Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!
