On September 21st 2011 I was on my second day visiting NYC for the first time. I walked from Penn Station to Ground Zero. Along the way I passed by Ladder 24 and saw the plaque of the fire fighters who perished on the terrible day. William was first on the list. I just want to express my deep thanks and sorrow for the men and their families. May God be with you all. And may God please continue to bless the United States of America.

God Bless the McGovern family. Today, the 9th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks is another day of remembrance and mourning.

I believe his nephew, Michael is part of the FDNY and he and his family I know are proud of him becoming part of New York's Bravest and may he stay safe yet be as brave as his uncle.

My Uncle Billy was always the life of the party. He would light up a room the second he walked in, his smile was beaming, and his laugh was so contagious. He could make you love a song you swore you hated. Anyone around him always had a great time, he insisted. He was an amazing guy, and no one can ever fill his shoes. He left many broken hearts behind, and our family has never been the same.

Billy was one of my friends, and I miss him very much. I will always remember his smile and the apartment in Long Beach.

It's sad to realise a fellow McGovern passed away. But it makes me proud that someone so brave bore my surname!
r.i.p William.

I visited NY in July 2001 and was devastated at the horrendous lost of life and especially at the loss of such a courageous fire officer. I wish I had the privilege of knowing him.

Billy was the best brother anyone could ask for. If you needed him for anything, he did not hesitate. He would be the first person I'd call and the first person there. It's so hard now when either something good happens or something bad, the person I want to speak to is Billy. He is so missed. It still doesn't seem real. Not one moment of one day goes by that I don't think of him and miss him.

William J. McGovern was obvoisly an amazing man! I may not have known him but I know that anyone who is willing to give up their own life in order to save the lives of others is obviously amazing! I'm a highschool student and at our school today we received the name of someone who had passed away during 9/11. William J. McGovern is the name I received I decided that I would see what I could find out about this amazing man and seeing that I could say something about him made me desperatly want to share my gratitude and apprecation to him for doing what he did! Thank you so much for setting an example for us all, William!

Bill was the most wonderful, loving person in the world. He made those he loved feel so very special. He had a contagious laugh, a warm heart, and an amazing spirit. He was the type of person people liked to be around. He had strong values, felt passionate about things that were important to him and will live on in our hearts forever We miss him so.

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.

Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!

9-11Heroes.us is a personal effort, not a business, nor is the site dedicated to any specific person or persons. We will not post negative comments. Moreover, 9-11Heroes.us reserves the right to choose which comments to post and also to edit the comments for spelling, punctuation, grammar, or edit comments that are unkind or offensive in some manner.
