In memory of Yoichi Sugiyama, remembered and respected by many. We saw the National Geographic documentary which mentioned Yoichi on that sad and fateful 9/11 day. His dear wife Harumi recalled the events and her sadness. But through her recollections, we now all saw a glimpse of her dear husband Yoichi and the world will support Harumi and her family and honor the memory of Yoichi. Here are some comments I found about him.
Remembering Yoichi. Respected greatly throughout the world.
He was the only person with this name.
His first name, and his last name. He was unique.
He was Yoichi Sugiyama.
Yoichi was a manager for Fuji Bank,
and had been in the US for 1 1/2 years.
This was the second time he had been in the United States.
He was at work on the morning of September 11.
Fuji Bank was located on the 80th floor of the World Trade Center.

Yoichi Sugiyama was one of the 2,996 victims of 9/11.

He lived in Fort Lee, New Jersey.
He was only 34 years old, married to Harumi, with two children, Tachi and Rikito.
This is how his family in Japan viewed the capture and killing of Osama Bin Laden:
“I don’t know what to say. I’m so surprised,” Mari Sumiyama, 71, said at her house in Meguro Ward, Tokyo. Sumiyama is the mother of Yoichi Sugiyama, an official of the now-defunct Fuji Bank who died at the age of 34 in the attack on the World Trade Center in New York.

Mari Sumiyama said she feels terrible because Bin Laden died without revealing the truth behind the terrorist attack.

“So many innocent people died. I wanted Bin Laden to explain why he did such a thing. I want to know what he thought about human life,” she said.

Yoichi Sumiyama’s family still celebrates Yoichi’s birthday on Aug. 17 every year because she does not want to accept that he has died, Sumiyama said.
Please remember Yoichi on this day.

“I wanted Bin Laden to tell the truth. I don’t know how to sort out my feelings,” said Yoichi’s 73-year-old father, Kazusada.
His grandmother said, ”It was his fate.” His brother is also a banker.

Yoichi will not be forgotten. Ja mata ne!

I didn't know Yoichi Sugiyama. However, on September 11, 2002, members of my community erected American Flags in honor of all those lost in the World Trade Center tragedy. As a memorial, I donated the cost of one of the flags. I now proudly own an American Flag that carries a label saying, "Yoichi Sugiyama, 34, Ft Lee, NJ." I look at the Flag every day, and am honored to "know" Yoichi in this way. God speed--we'll not forget you.

Post your memorial thoughts:

Share your feelings and memories of grief and sadness concerning the 9-11-2001 attack, or of positive memories.  If you knew this person, help us to build a small 'bio' of the person and share with us something about his/her life:

  • what kind of person he/she was,
  • what nice points you remember about him/her,
  • what kind of relationship you had with him/her,
  • what you two perhaps did together,
  • what he/she meant to you,
  • or other things about him/her might be especially encouraging for other people.

This web site is intended solely as a means of allowing all of us to express our grief and sympathy in behalf of the people who lost their lives, and also our love and compassion towards those who lost loved ones and friends in the 9/11/01 tragedy. The site is strictly for memorial mentions of those who passed away in the tragedy, not of other people who have passed away.

Our hearts are very touched with concern in behalf of those people, and it is to them that we dedicate this web site. It is not our intent to venture into the realms of WHO should face judgement, to take responsibility for those terrible events, because we have no way of knowing for sure who all might fall into that category. Therefore, any letters or notes written passing judgment upon any person or group will not be published on this site. We do NOT want this site to be a base for expressions of hatred, but only for expressions of LOVE!

9-11Heroes.us is a personal effort, not a business, nor is the site dedicated to any specific person or persons. We will not post negative comments. Moreover, 9-11Heroes.us reserves the right to choose which comments to post and also to edit the comments for spelling, punctuation, grammar, or edit comments that are unkind or offensive in some manner. We are maintaining this site with our own money and time. We try to keep the advertisements to a minimum and we try to make them as unobtrusive as possible. The revenue goes back to maintaining this site.

Thank you for your understanding in these matters.
